: Is this idle shaft too far gone?

Just a quick poll... I'm doing a SM465 swap in my 60, and finally got the chance to bust open the split case tonight.

I finally figured out why it whined under load in 2wd (and 4wd) HI... Looks like the idler shaft is chewed up on one side only.

I guess I'm being a total cheapskate, but I'm having a hard time spending the $44 that SOR wants for a new one... I was thinking of grinding a notch in to the other side, and putting it in backwards so the 1:1 gears have a nice new place to grind up. Should I spend the cash and just be done with it?

As my Dad would say...

"There always time to do it over .. but never time to do it right."

I'd go new if it were me.

If that shaft looks like that then I question the needle bearings (caged) around it.

I recommend buying a total rebuild kit and saving$$$$$$$$$

If that idler gear starts walking it will ruin that case.

I say keep it in there - just think if it costs you $50 for the part & shipping (not since SOR is way more on S&H) when it lets go, you can spend money on the tow home, and if you can do the swap in 10 hours, you will only have wasted $5 hour:flipoff2: ;) ;)

Put a kit in & be done with it!

Dave,
you might want to check w/ Rick D. he has the best price on rebuild kits ($145) but they take about a week to get in. TPI carries them for like $155 & they have them in stock. you might want to replace the bearings & also check the inside of your idler gear for anything that might have caused this.

Hmm, does that mean you suggest I buy the kit? :D

I'll order one when my next paycheck comes around... I ok'ed it with the budget commander, my wife, who thinks my truck is the most expensive hobby on the planet...

Well, its not as expensive as, umm, well, damn I guess it is!
