: The $1K CJ
RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 04:41 PM Who wants to see a build of a spring over CJ7? Nobody? That's what I thought, but I've had quite a few people ask if I would post pics of my new build, so here it is:
It started with an ad here on pirate for an unknown year CJ, with a 351w, t-18, and welded axles for cheap. Seeing as i can't pass up deals on crap like this i drug it home with a budget build in mind. This was the last time the word "budget" will get used on this build. . . .
Here's the pic used in the ad:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/ebaystuff592new.jpg
This thing was rough. The engine only had one motor mount left, god only knows how the trans was still attached to one beat ass skidplate. The gas tank only held about 5 gallons, and when you set the rear of the truck to level, the front was an inch and a half off...
but somehow she still ran hard...
95% of the frame twist was between the firewall and the front bumper. So i jigged it to the floor, pie cut it in a couple places, jacked the front level, and welded it back together.
Somehow the old cage was square, so i cut out the crossmembers, and used what i could:

http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/IMG_2664.jpg
RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 04:44 PM Because the chassis twisted once, i wanted to reduce the chance it would happen again by tieing the whole truck together, from the front to the back.
So i needed something in the back:

These are all the pics i have currently, but i'll update as soon as possible.
cj5 buggy 05-07-2009, 06:02 PM i have the same twist issue with my frame. did you get pics of the jig and re-welds?
nice build so far
tbeede 05-07-2009, 07:34 PM word on the street says this thing is about to get the atlas, 60F/14R, locked, and pushed out to 100.5 wheel base. I'm hoping for some new photos because these are a couple weeks old already...
RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 10:45 PM The tires showed up last week. 39x14.5x17 pitbull maddogs
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030010.jpg
And everyone wants measurements. These are 37" tall and 12" wide, unmounted. The wheels should be here Monday so i'll get final measurements then.

RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 10:55 PM Here's where the cage ties through the firewall

and the tube to the frame under the floorboards
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030008.jpg
When i got the truck, the motor mounts were destroyed. It had AA mounts that had pulled out of the block and bent downward. I lifted the motor, drilled and heli-coiled the block. Then i tied the two mounts together and spaced the motor up 3/4" for more clearance for the tie rod. The AA bushings were burned up by an exhaust leak, so i replaced them with Model-T bushings from speedway motors.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030014.jpg
Heres the piece that goes under the oil pan to tie the mounts together.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030015.jpg
RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 11:06 PM The exhaust needed to stay tucked out of the way, so i decided to build one from scratch. It starts with 2x 2.5" pipes that come into a fabbed collector, and it will be 3" to the tail of the truck.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030007-1.jpg
the exhaust will get finished when the cross members are finalized:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030003.jpg
RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 11:24 PM The axles got some work from WFO concepts. The front started came from a '79 chev single wheel and the rear is a Cab and Chassis 14b from a '99 chev. The rear got disc brakes and an ARB. The front was narrowed 4.5" and has all new kingpins, studs, 35 spline outers, dynaloc hubs, and WFO high steer. The wheelbase was stretched in the rear by using YJ spring over springs from Rubicon Express, and redrilling the perches.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030002-1.jpg
The front was moved by the same RE springs, redrilled center perches and relocated spring perches. You can also see the MORE steering box bracket in this pic:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030571.jpg
You can see the score mark from where the bracket was cut, and now moved 2.5" forward:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030016.jpg
The factory threads in the frame were wasted, so i tapped a 1/4" plate for the new bracket to bolt to, and welded it up
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/IMG_3168.jpg
and picked up some shwag from RuffStuff Specialties today. . .

RockcontrolXJ 05-07-2009, 11:54 PM Can't forget the switch panel from 12voltguy
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/S5030001.jpg
This is about where the build is at right now. I was hoping to finish by Memorial day weekend, for a trip to the Moonrocks, but i'm not sure i'll make it. I'll update as things move along.
So far every vendor i've dealt with on this project has kicked ass:
WFO Concepts : axles, brackets, steering, jeep
Rock Buggy Supply : Atlas
4ws.com : Pitbulls
RPMRacers : Walker Evan's beadlocks
12Voltguy : Switch panel
RuffStuff Specialties : diff covers and brackets
FullsizeXJ : springs
Poly Performance : shocks, dimple dies
I can't say enough good words about these guys, excellent service from all
MIGUEL BRAGA 05-08-2009, 12:01 AM good work man. continue come with pics... alot of pics :)
cj5.5 05-08-2009, 05:33 AM Very nice.
Tube work is kick ass. I like the rear halo section. [Might have to file that away for a future cage build.]
IndyCJ 05-08-2009, 05:38 AM Excellent!!! Keep up with the pics
RockcontrolXJ 05-08-2009, 07:39 AM i have the same twist issue with my frame. did you get pics of the jig and re-welds?
nice build so far
I wish i had pics, but i didn't snap any.
the freeak 05-08-2009, 07:44 AM No plating on the CJ frame where the welded parts attach? ?
They aren't exactly known for NOT cracking... :(
I like the dimple dies on the dash, and the rear of the cage is really cool. Lots of nice work and parts going into this rig.
mbryson 05-08-2009, 08:38 AM Good build. Giving me some good ideas for my front end tube work. I like alot of the things you've done up there.
RockcontrolXJ 05-11-2009, 10:18 PM The UPS guy came through today . . . . . .

dustin_mud 05-11-2009, 11:33 PM very nice
LucasFury 05-12-2009, 12:01 PM I'd like to see closer pictures of those front hangers, please sir.
LAGNAFinaCJ 05-12-2009, 12:13 PM Nice build!!!
I also dig the '67 too!!:smokin:
Brentmckinsey 05-12-2009, 12:33 PM Looking good.
Fawk Awph 05-12-2009, 01:06 PM Hurry up.......memorial day at fordyce!!
Be there!!
Btw, what Kind of bullshit are you doing to get this thing to smog......I'm guessing pre-smog title to something else and some trickery with the vin plates?
RockcontrolXJ 05-12-2009, 01:38 PM No trickery, she passes all smog requirements of Mariposa County, CA:smokin:.
I'd like to see closer pictures of those front hangers, please sir.
I don't have any pics right now, but I'll get some up as soon as I get them finished.
93chico4by 05-12-2009, 04:52 PM Damn brian, that looks like one hell of a knee slammer of a lower dash bar? i am guessing you checked the clearance, but the pic makes it look uncomfortable.
On the whole, the rig looks awesome, i hope you aren't planning on painting it.....
Nathanl_01 05-12-2009, 07:53 PM What is this height to the bottom of the frame?
RockcontrolXJ 05-13-2009, 10:30 AM Damn brian, that looks like one hell of a knee slammer of a lower dash bar? i am guessing you checked the clearance, but the pic makes it look uncomfortable.
Not even close
What is this height to the bottom of the frame?
26" to the frame and 23" to the bottom of the t-case cross member. I'm going to try to bring it down an inch or two, and hopefully it will settle a bit as well.
Colossus 05-13-2009, 02:30 PM Good stuff man. Clean ass Camaro man... More pics of both!! :smokin:
kiyul4130 05-13-2009, 09:05 PM i dont know about this forum, i guess ill post in it... :flipoff2: hey its looking good. im sure we'll be out on the trail soon. are you going to cut out the rear like your old jeep? i thought/think that would look bad ass.
Fawk Awph 05-13-2009, 09:21 PM i think a comp cut would look cool, but its probably not very street friendly, looks like you can get away with just cutting the fenders up and back a little more and. . .well, cooler looking.
you get anything else done in the last few days?
RockcontrolXJ 05-13-2009, 10:31 PM No comp cut on this one. The idea was to keep this CJ more street friendly, but even with the narrow axles the rear tires are completely outside the tub. I'm sure i'll get hit for mudflaps as soon as it moves.
Looking back, one of the reasons i comp cut the XJ was cause everyone said it couldn't be done:D.
Did look pretty sic tho:smokin:

Fawk Awph 05-13-2009, 10:45 PM never did figure out the fucking triple sticks on that thing. . . . i swear one of them was there just to mess with the driver.
chevyforlife502 05-14-2009, 04:04 AM That some great work bro keep the process come with the pictures
RockcontrolXJ 05-14-2009, 02:20 PM never did figure out the fucking triple sticks on that thing. . . . i swear one of them was there just to mess with the driver.
Only two sticks on that truck, no wonder you couldn't figure it out . . .
RockcontrolXJ 05-26-2009, 09:46 PM Well i didn't get much done memorial weekend, almost bought this:
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/1979%20Cj-7/S5030021.jpg
but I figured three CJ's is probably one too many:D.
I've been working on some small items on the yellow truck. I got the steering column back together with all new bits, got the exhaust fabbed, tacked the transmission cross member together, and got all the accessories bolted to the front of the motor. Here's a couple pics:

kiyul4130 06-02-2009, 06:32 PM looks like the driveline will squeeze right by the exhaust. whats your checklist? were gunna try and hit fordyce up within the coming month.

onlyifihadachevy 06-03-2009, 05:45 PM i didn't see o.d. of the tire mounted, and is it just the pic or is the front tire messed up?

jeeplt1 07-29-2009, 06:07 PM whats with the model t bushings? my AA's are shot whats the advantage?
RockcontrolXJ 07-30-2009, 07:20 AM All the accessory brackets were fabbed from shit i had laying around.
The advantage of the model T bushings is the cost: $20 instead of $60.
Tyler C 09-03-2009, 07:03 PM Soo... any updates?
Fawk Awph 09-03-2009, 08:41 PM ya brian. . . . you skipped out on a whole nother wheelin season.
RockcontrolXJ 09-03-2009, 09:23 PM ya brian. . . . you skipped out on a whole nother wheelin season.
I know it . . . . maybe i'll try for snow season:D
Progress on the jeep has slowed to a crawl cause I started two projects, one in San Francisco and one in Oakland. Sure doesn't leave a lot of wrenching time when I'm commuting from Sac. . . any way I've spent quite a few hours painting and finishing up loose ends so here's a couple updated pics:

Fawk Awph 09-03-2009, 09:57 PM hey, at least you painted it.
mike4089 09-04-2009, 11:16 AM do you have some better closer pics of the front mounts? you didnt run into any steering issues stretching the front? id like to stretch my front like that also, when i swap in my 60/14 bolt como
RockcontrolXJ 09-04-2009, 01:37 PM The front hangers are Ruffstuff shackle hangers (http://www.ruffstuffspecialties.com/catalog/standard-shackle-hanger-p-182.html) mounted vertically. I did trim the front frame rails back some before the hangers were fabbed. They were then plated in with some 1.5" wide .125 steel strap.
http://i26.photobucket.com/albums/c132/th45cruzr/CJ%207/IMG_0353.jpg
The steering box is pushed out 1"-1.25" with the M.O.R.E. steering box (http://www.mountainoffroad.com/Catalog/SteerBrace/heavy-duty-steering-box-mount.htm) mount. The steering box location would not work with typical hi-steer, but since my tie rod is behind the axle center line there are no issues.

Fawk Awph 01-04-2010, 11:50 AM Hey dirtbag. I got a message fro you saying you moved back to Chico??? This true?? Hit me up thus weekend, is the first time I'll be in town for 2 weeks.
Oh ya.......looks like shit :flipoff2:
jeepman1320 01-04-2010, 01:19 PM How far forward did you push your axle? I am starting on my 60/70 swap tomorrow on my Scrambler. I am using the same style high steer arms with a waggy pitman, and the box has already been relocated 1.5" forward. Trying to figure out how far I can go before I run into any serious problems.
Clay
RockcontrolXJ 01-05-2010, 07:53 PM The front is on yj's with the hangers moved forward 2.5" and the spring perches redrilled +1.5". I could probably go another inch forward with no steering issues.
samb. 01-05-2010, 08:08 PM What do the tires measure mounted with air in them?
Tyler C 01-05-2010, 10:02 PM Awesome to see this thing on the road finally. I love the simplicity of this build :smokin:
jeepman1320 01-06-2010, 11:38 AM The front is on yj's with the hangers moved forward 2.5" and the spring perches redrilled +1.5". I could probably go another inch forward with no steering issues.
Cool thanks, I am already 2" forward. I was hoping for another 2.5"-3", So looks like I will be in the clear.

I did have a couple problems with the Walker's. I lost one tire on Wrecking ball and both fronts on resolution. There was no damage, and i think i actually burped air through the lock (not the inner bead) on WB. Anyone heard of this before with these wheels?
Fawk Awph 02-15-2010, 04:39 PM i got this thing running shorty after you left. the front shifter for the atlas (the all thread part) had backed out and the shifter was flopping, but that was an easy fix, i think it needs a jam nut on there.
after i tightened up the acc pump on the carb it started to run a lot better so i took it up Jack Hammer for you haha. wheeled flawlessly. i did notice that if i wasnt paying attention the shifter would slowly start to work its way out of 1st gear. it was weird, youll see when you wheel it next. other than that and a little rash on the drivers side door jam it actually wheeled fucking awesome, and it went up some steep shit with no wheel hop or anything, i was totally impressed for leafs and a 102" wheelbase.
ill see if i can get kyle to post up the video of it on Jack for ya. thanks for letting me take it out for a trail, i was getting hella antsy down there without my ride.
jeeperman19 02-16-2010, 02:22 PM Cool build! taking notes for a future build of mine
dirtbikeboy54 02-16-2010, 10:20 PM How do you like your tires? I'm thinking of getting the same ones but I havent found anyone who has wheeled them yet.
RockcontrolXJ 02-17-2010, 09:47 AM So far they're great. Way more round than any swamper i've seen, and they absolutely wrap rocks at 5psi.
Call 4ws, you'd be surprised how cheap they are too :D.
Fillupondeez 02-17-2010, 02:42 PM nice build, can you post sum close up shots of the rear spring hangers were the shackle is mounted and how you mounted the front of your traction bar!
thanks, Philip!
RockcontrolXJ 02-17-2010, 03:52 PM nice build, can you post sum close up shots of the rear spring hangers were the shackle is mounted and how you mounted the front of your traction bar!
thanks, Philip!
The frame side rear shackle hangers are stock CJ-7.
I don't have any pics with the traction bar installed, but the front of the bar is connected to a short shackle which is connected to the crossmember behind the atlas. I used a 7/8" rod end from ruffstuff for the front of the bar, and there is a poly bushing mounted on the crossmember. You can see the steel poly bushing sleeve welded on the right side of the crossmember in the picture below.

Fillupondeez 02-17-2010, 05:19 PM Thanks, what wall tubing did u use to make your tarction bar? And are the rear shackle hangers still in the sam place or did move them back also?
RockcontrolXJ 02-17-2010, 09:22 PM The traction bar is .120" wall DOM, 1.75" OD. I plated the bottom tube of the arm with 10ga steel to protect against rock assaults.
Shackle hangers are dead stock, no mods.

nolan2010 07-16-2010, 11:23 PM you're always recovering people man. Anyway your jeep turned out nice. Good build.
toomanywillys 07-17-2010, 12:43 AM nice looking jeep... what did those tires end up measuring out at mounted? I looked twice, but I have been drinking
RockcontrolXJ 07-20-2010, 07:51 AM I don't think i ever posted the tire height mounted. They are right at 37.5" with 22psi in the tires. They squat about an inch under the jeep, they are just over 38" tall without weight.

Beastus_Maximus 07-20-2010, 05:18 PM Man from what you started with you have done a hell of a job turning it around. So much so the PO probably couldnt even tell it is thier old Jeep any more.
dirtbikeboy54 01-14-2011, 08:26 PM Your Jeep looks GREAT! Its the same direction I'm going to take me YJ.
YellowRenegade 01-14-2011, 10:30 PM So how were the tires in the sand????
RockcontrolXJ 01-15-2011, 12:23 PM So how were the tires in the sand????
They work great in the sand, but really any mild tire with low air pressure will.

then I'll be ready.
I have Tues - Friday off, so I should be there Tues morning.
BUILTnotBOT 01-15-2011, 08:57 PM Did nearly the exact same setup with my cage, far as building off the stock rollbar. Really like how you did the rear portion! gussets look coo :smokin:
really enjoy readin a build like this. so many high dollar rigs out there and to see somethin simple not too spendy and still gets after it is awesome.
njjeep 01-15-2011, 11:30 PM are you glad you narrowed the front 4.5"? what axles are you running in the dana 60?
knightkrawler 01-16-2011, 10:10 AM Very nice build up; my wife even said so and she hates the ideals I get from other folks build ups. Like starting one
RockcontrolXJ 01-16-2011, 11:47 AM are you glad you narrowed the front 4.5"? what axles are you running in the dana 60?
Yes, its just wide enough to be stable, without being soo wide that I have to take the absurd lines. The shafts are all spicer. I bought some 35 spline stubs and had the long side shaft shortened by Dean at Kick Ass Offroad.
