: DuraMax's first oil change

Not wanting to open up a HUGE debate on the everyones favorite brand and type of engine oil ...
But my DuraMax diesel is near ready for her first oil change.
I'm at 1500 now and have just started to do some towing.
I'm willing to change my own oil because all the local pit stops are Pennsoil and I was wondering if I shouldn't go to Valvoline (I used to use this in my drag racer) or Mobil1 (syntetic?)
Just asking cuz this is my first diesel and I want to treat her right and I've been reading some bad things about Pennsoil lately.

I keep hearing Rotella T, over and over, and over... I'd stick with a diesel-specific oil... They have more detergent additives IIRC.

You could use any name brand oil and everything would be fine. I always suggest Chevron Delo 400 as you can buy it just about anywhere, even non Chevron stations have it.

Either use Rotela or Delo 400. I use synthetic tranny fluid and gear oils, but I want to change my engine oil more often. DONT use non CH4 or better rated oils. As eskimo said, you must have the diesel addatives in your oil. I use Delo 400. It is available at Costco and Walmart.

How many quarts does that Duramax take??

I've been told to only run Delo or Rotella in my PSD. I use the Delo 'cause it's easy to get (Costco)

Here's another vote for either Rotella T or Delo. I run Rotella in mine and have it analyzed every third oil change with 4k between oil changes. So far no problems have shown up of any kind. I can get Delo cheap at Costco, but don't want to change brands at this point.

I run Rotella, nothing wrong with Delo either, though.

Also, some people don't like the smell of Rotella for the first couple hundred miles after an oil change, so they run Delo (this may only be a Dodge thing, though).

I would stay away from synthetic for the first 20K or so until it fully breaks in. I run Delo 400 15-40 in both my jeep and truck, Rotella is good also. I used to work on a heavy equipment fleet and we used Delo everything.

yep, I run delo as well, but Im also well over 20k ;) I dont know about the new duramax motor but I know cummins doesnt recomend synth during break in. I think they suggest holding off till about 20k?

Rotella T, use no substitute.
(if you have to, Delo 400)

You can't get 400 around here, but Rotella is right up there with stupidity on the list of common substances.

Watch the dreaded Duratick-tick:mad: . Mine has it if I use "cheap" oil. Rotella gives me the tick as well. I use the Delvac 1300 (I think thats what it is...walmart = 5 bucks a gallon). Also, stay away from the FRAM filter :flipoff2: , as it supposedly doesn't have the pressure relief system in it like the Champion Labs filter (They make most of the higher quality filters....should be around 10 bucks) A great site for Duramax stuff is www.thedieselpage.com The message board rocks for HD and Duramax related stuff.
