: Makita Grinder problems??

I have a makita grinder, and it's best damn grinder I have ever had....with one exception.

It's got that bull shit built in overload circuit breaker. So if it get's overloaded, it clicks off, you wait 20 seconds and reset the breaker.

My problem is my damn breaker trips continuously. If I turn it on, and touch metal with it, it clicks off. WTF?? Is the grinder toast?? Or can I replace this damn breaker (or better yet by pass it )

Anybody else have this problem??

My 4" Makita is going on 15 years of service, hard service. If I'm on it, cutting thick metal and it binds it'll shutdown. Once it's heated up it tends to trip the breaker easier, but not to the point of being a problem. You should be able to get a new breaker. I wouldn't bypass the breaker as it will only lead to a shorter life for the grinder.

Yup, I've experienced that very same thing with a friends Makita. I went down and bought a Harbor Freight $20 special and it has no breaker. Works great too!!

I'm sure you can bypass that breaker, just take it apart and tie the two wires going into the breaker together, viola', fixed!!

Oh and :flipoff2:

The older makita's seem to be much better than the newer lower priced makita's. The newer one's don't have near enough amps ...

same used to happen to me, i got pissed and gave it away.
I boought the Craftmans one for like 30-40 bucks from sears, for an add 7 you can buy a 5 year warreny with it.
so far i really like this grinder, have had it for 2 years

After having a radiator destroyed by one because of the lack of a paddle switch I tossed my makita in favor of a milwaukee. Either way though I never, ever had a problem with the overload breaker tripping on the makita unless it was REALLY buried.

Sounds like operator error or too much

I wasnt the operator. Either way with the paddle switch you let go and its dead. That makita bounced around the engine compartment for a couple minutes before being yanked out successfully by the cord. Thus earning it the nickname "the weasel"

Only time my Makita has shut it self off is when it flew out my hands and got caught in my shirt. Spun around a couple times the shut off. Unwrapped it from my shirt hit the reset button and started right up. Best tool I own.

Have you used Josh's grinder, no guard no handle, no nothing. I'm surprised he still has all his fingers. You should read the warning label on the thing

"Warning, you must consume  before operating"

I don't see the problem here?? First thing I do is remove that damn guard from mine, then the handle is next. I have it handy in case I need it, but it works much better without it.

I only have one scar on my knuckle so far. ;)

makita is the best damned grinder ive ever owned. i know whatcha mean about the overload shut off. although on mine i just leave the switched locked in, and when it overloads hit the button on the bottom and she kicks right back in. only thing i dont like is the 2 pronged unit that you use to get the circle deal that holds the discs on with. some jackass used mine and tightened it too much, cant get the damn thing off.
