Ok, i found a new body style cop car...Ford victoria or somethin' or another....But it had a fuel injected 4.6 liter and it sad V8 OHV or Over head cam...can't remember it's a middle 90's or possibly a late 90's cop car...im thinking a 1996. But i was just wondering if this is the same motor that is in the 1996 cobras or what...Does anyone have any casting numbers that i should be looking for...it's in the local junkyard and can get it for a really good price.

Do any of you ford guys have some suggestions for me??

There's nothing "special" about those motors. In fact, they are typically driven hard, but should be maintained well.

OK, soo what are saying that doesn't make sense or answer my question... I DON"T HAVE IT RIGHT NOW, but you gave me some useful info on it not being special, but as far as HP does these have a lot...i would figure since they ARE sheriffs cars and state patrol that they would, but does anyone have any specs for me on these motors. I know those are driven hard, and i know engines should be maintained...But since i don't currently have it that info was useless info to me...what i NEED is specs and if these are good motors for HP.

NEEDED INFO: Are these good for HP, what is the stock HP rating for em', also are these good building motors??

They are not the same motor as the cobra the they are 4.6 but the cobra has got some factory mods to them.... as for the HP on it http://auto.consumerguide.com/auto/used/reviews/full/index.cfm/id/2032.htm

says they got 190 hp and 210 with Dual exhaust

On a side note i see you live in Auburn... me too drop me a line and maybe i can meet up with ya sometime and wrench or something. dangerranger33@hotmail.com

Sounded like you were considering buying a Police motor, so I thought I'd let you know that little bit of useless info. Just something to think about before you buy one. If you want specs, you can probably look in and crown vic chilton manual. Another thing to consider is how wide those motors are.

I don't have answers to your questions, I just keep my mouth shut next time. :rasta:

NOBODY, u did give me helpful info...but i don't have it and you were talking like i did and that i need to maintain engines or sumpin:p But as far as it being maintained...couldn't tell ya on how the original owner kept it up...i need to open her up and see whats shakin' in the motor and see if its worth it...BUT as far is them not being special...that was useful info b/c i thought they were special...YOU might have just saved me some cash!!

I will offer what I know.
The Crown Vic's and stuff that I have had contact with in squad car form all have the same 4.6 as any other Crown Vic. As to advice regarding this motor...I can offer a few opinions and you take em as you see fit.

The 4.6 is durable and quite readily abuseable 100K plus engine in a car. They are extreamly responsive to the usual upgrades but also cost to play with. Rebuild costs I can help you with as I just did one and it was a costly $3100 (but that was no expense spared, built to be abused buildup, head work being a tad costly as it needed all new valves)

These engines are not overly "grunty" in lower rpms in my experiance and do not take well to overheating at all. (common occurance in a 4x4 no matter how hard we try to avoid it)

That said, if you still like the idea, have a plan for a transmission that suits you, and the reasearch supports it's feasable to use in your application (width, weight, oil pan, bellhousing pattern, ect)
may I suggest you buy a 4.6 outa of a late 90's Lincoln Mark VIII they are factory rated at 290HP and 300HP in the LSC models. My father owns a 98 LSC ( one I did engine for) and with a Paxton on it as well as a few small mods,it gives me fits keeping my Stang faster..lol

WOW, great info...now, is that the AVG. price for a rebuild for the 4.6 out of the crown vic.?? An international motor is cheaper to rebuild with head work and block work, and the best parts available...$3100 seems real steep. I might be better off with a chevy 350...right now i have a sm420 and thats whats going in next...so i really need to know if i should go with a 350 or this 4.6?? I dunno i need to think a little:confused:

If i was to get this 4.6, it would be an ave rebuild with prolly a stock cam...nothing over a mid range and i don't think i would need new valves...but might as well...would just a standard rebuild w/ a little more grunt still be close to $3100??

Looking @ my reciepts looks like around $2100 for a "normal" rebuild. I am unsure how you would do the sm420 to a mod Ford motor as the Modulars use a diff bellhousing pattern than the older Fords. Possibly A Mustang GT bellhousing off a 4.6 and then adaption to the sm420 would be easy or possibly a scattershield drilled custom...personally in my Scout, I really LOVED the Olds W30455, what a ride;-) And the 440 Mopar is a neat swap as well. Hell yr desicion, but I would personally put that 4.6 low on my " first choice for a swap" list......but then thats me. But then I had a well built 392 once I was happy with as well......

well i have a 392 in it right now...i need a little more HP rather than torque...i ride slick stuff and don't want to have to look down at the tach and make sure i don't go over 4000 rpms...i need something that can handle the rpms...as far as the adapting the 4.6 to the sm420...that wouldn't be the problem...it would be if dropped the 4.6 in there and it was NOT WORTH, i have a hook up for stuff like bellhousings and adapters and such...i know alot of scout owners run a 440...what i really need is high rpms and engine that can handle them...when im talking high rpms i mean around 4500-5800, but an engine that can handle that...an IH can't really unless it's very very very well built, but i need some reliability also. I wouldn't put anything over a mid range cam in any engine im going to do...but a smaller engine can handle higher rpms a *little* better...so should a just go for a well built chevy 350 or try to find one of those Mark VII 4.6's?? I tried to give you a little info on what im looking for and what kinda wheelin' i do...I ride Tellico, and now it will be Gardendale...All slicker than snot rocks with moss and water and mud over em' so i need rpms and very good wheel spin...whats your go for a motor on this kinda of wheelin' and my preferences

thanks

Given your wheeling terrain, ease of buying parts, and the no question abuseability I would most likly run a small block Chevy or Ford Windsor just due to bang for the buck and they both will withstand alot of high RPM running.. That or step into a Chevy or Ford bigblock..I wouldn't choose the 4.6 for a wheeling rig personally.
