Hey lance this is your front shaft hope you don't mind - :D its a limited cut on tube even though your running a 3/8 wall :D try to break it it has 4 welds holding the slip end- hehe

Jess, explain this concept to me one more time? I ma thinking it would be nice with my 9" as low as it is.

Interesting idea, but I think the thread needs more pitch or else any forward movement you *might* get will be awful slow ;)

5 1/2 threads per inch and we got board for 5 minutes in the shop - a board machinist is a bad thing! :D - the concept is this we want to see what kind of movement we can get if you land your front shaft mainly on a big ol rock and cannot get quite enough tracktion to get over - so we don't like backing up its the no sit and spin theory- Jess :D

were alos looking at welding a 1/4 bar wrapped around the shaft in a spy-roll style- we will see how board we get in the next few weeks- maybe maybe not- Jess :D

I don't think you'll get any forward movement...
if you have enough pressure on the shaft for those "threads" to drive the vehicle, it's going to push the vehicle sideways instead of forward IMHO... might actually hurt ya cuz then you have something for a rock to hang up on rather than a smooth shaft to drag forward over. But hey, I could be wrong.

all thought are welcome- that's why were testing-

I really don't think it'll do much, other than skip threads over the rocks and auger the surface down, but in certain cases it just might grab enough to get the feet back on the ground, so what the heck :D. The type of rock would be important. Soft, shaly stuff would just break right off...

If it doesn't make any difference, no loss :)

Although a cool idea, I think it'll be more of a hinderance if anything. Like AZFord said, unless you have some incredible pitch on it, you're going to be going sideways. No matter what, you'll be dragging yourself up diagonally and off the line that you initially chose (probably into a tougher one). And unless you're stuck on one incredibly smooth rock, those threads will catch on something and hinder your forward movement. But hey, maybe it would give you just enough forward edge to get traction back to the tires. Worth a test I say.

IMO, for it to work, and I believe it *could* you would need 1/4" or more likely 1/2" square cut threads with a pitch of roughly .5 or .25TPI.

Think wood screw or more appropriately AUGER.

Well in all honesty I am unsure how that might work in the rocks...I will await Lance's test report with interest.

Jes one thing I am unsure if you considered, but may be of interest to you is that your idea may have one huge benifit to us Northern Wheelers who play in the mud. The weeds associated with playing on trails consistantly covered in mud have a way of snarling on driveshafts and totally destroying things underneath the rig. Fuel lines, exahust, pinion seals, and even causing shaft failures. I wonder if those "threads" on a shaft would cause the weeds to get sliced and possibly cause some form of self cleaning. Sorry just sort of thinking out loud here, but thought I would toss out the ideaer.

I too think the threads would need to be taller... On top of that, is there a reason for calling it spy-roll? over spiral? JUst curious...

I would tend to agree. Jess what are you doing?? Get back to work on my 1710 series CV!!!

Although you may not get any forward motion form the sprial cut, you may get the grinding action needed to remove some of the rock so you can get some more traction on the tires.

Bert

You may get only sideways motion, But that by itself may be a good thing. It might only move you 1 inch to the left or right, But that inch may be enough to get your tires enough traction to pull you out.

Good Idea Jess!

Can't knock you for trying anything....but I still like the 1/4" spiral stock wrapped around the tube...put sticker down and then weld around it with a large TPI, or after thinking about it you might notch the stock prior to wrapping it around sorta like a stair case....and please feel free to steal all idea's, you've earned it.....
