hey guys, i am wanting to cut a 8-lug hp 44 down to about 64" WMS to WMS to work with a 63" wide rear ff 60. the question is, is this too short/long for me to be able to buy warn cromos, i have been told that the inner axle length needs to be a stock measurement for me to purchase warns.any ideas on this from those of you who have done this?apprec!!

If anybody knows, when for example you buy a set of warn 44 axles and run CTM's could you shorten the axle shaft and roll splines into this high strength shaft? Or would you need some other sort of other machine to do it, since the alloy would be more dense than stock shafts?

If you cut the axle down to Scout II width, and use the 8 lug outers, you'll be between 63-64" Then you can order the Warns off the shelf.

you can order custom length Warn shafts through Dutchman. I believe Currie as well

63"-64" sounds good, i'm only doing this to keep the po-po off my ass because the jeep will see quite a bit of street and i will have to drive it to the trail, for now. what blows is i have a f/r set off ford 60's sitting next to the 44 at ma friends garage. had it all figured out( thanks to bigdudes great advice ), but then decided i will see the street too much for 38's.Jdjanda, do you by chance know the inner axle length of scoutll 44's? or i could also put the 1/2 ton/ 5 lug outers on and be 65" wide if i remember correct( more likely i'm wrong). well, keep the ideas flowing, any help is greatly appreciated!!!!

Son a beetch, Warn pulled the axle application chart from their site. Sheet, I'll have to measure up a set of axles for you.

Yeah you can cut the housing down but you will need to get "custom" inner shafts made. You can buy "blank" shafts from warn a spline them yourself but it would be easier to have dutchman/moser make you a set. If you do your cutting down right you could get a set of "wagoneer" inners and get away without having custom "inners" made....might save a few $$ too

If you stay six lug you can cut a Chevy 44 down 4" on the long side and use a long side shaft from any '80-91 Wagoneer. That will get you to ~63.5". The stock Chevy long side shaft is 36.13" and the driver's drop Waggie is 32.12". Worked for me. If you convert it to five lug it will be an inch wider and eight lug will make it 2" wider. Of course this only works if you want a passenger side drop front axle. You didn't say what it's going into.

its going on a 95 yj and i still have the 231 in it, reason for the ford axle and i want hp to boot. i've got a 300 sitting there as well, but i'll probably get an atlas later because of the price to build a 300 good. so iv'e got a couple of options for the hacking, i just need to figure which one. i'll check out warn, dutchman, and even moser to see what they have. the idea of cheap spares(waggys) sounds good, i don't want to have to buy 2 sets of axles even though i doubt i will break warns with ctm's. building it right the second/third time around works for me!well guys, appreciate it greatly, this will save me some time and money!!!! any other ideas, swing em this way!!later.
