: Need radiator fan input...
Harvester of Sorrow 05-12-2009, 10:22 AM So my fan is busted up and bent/ground to shit...this is from having stuff stuffed into the engine compartment, having it hit the shroud from torque loading, etc.

I am having a semi-difficult time finding a stock replacement fan for the 472 and am contemplating the following before I put it back together:

This guy is like $43.00 and "should" mount right up to my flange...

This guy is like $143.00 and draws 24amps...
What say you bitches...?
chris fresh 05-12-2009, 11:06 AM i hear alot about taurus fans. maybe bone yard pull for short dough
Mechanos 05-12-2009, 11:22 AM I had planned on running the Taurus fan, but ran into packaging issues. Easiest fix was to just bolt on the stock mech. fan. If I were going to run an electric, I'd look at the Taurus fan since it moves a shit-ton of air and is cheap from the boneyard. If you can't find one and/or don't have time to go yarding to look for one, you might try the Chicago connection. ;)
spreader 05-12-2009, 12:22 PM Here awhile back the local IH dealer in Phoenix had 16" electric push/pull fans for $75+tax. The one you pictured is stickly a "puller". A stainless steel Flexalite cost me about $65 here while back, but it was real noisy. SO, now all you gotta decide, do-ya want to blow or suck.
rkscout 05-12-2009, 12:30 PM I would go with the mechanical fan. I haven't had good luck running electrics. I've tried them on two different jeeps that I've built, and ended up going back to the mechanical fans to keep them cool. The only rig that I've had electrics work on is my scout. But I have a big aluminum radiator in it though. I have two electrics on the radiator. A pusher and a puller to be able to cover the whole radiator.
ChiScouter 05-12-2009, 01:15 PM I believe your 472 uses a standard GM pilot and flange dimensions, you should be able to use anything GM from the 60's through........the 90's? I believe that a IH waterpump used the same flange so you could even use a IH fan,....... well not like the tractor looking thing Rusty had:D
The Chicago fan warehouse is about empty, I used to get them when guys pulled radiators and left the fans behind, I am down to 2 MK8's, I plan on using one Mk8 and saving the motor from the other as a spare. With the size of your rad, I would look more towards a fan from a later model Ford full size car, or GM twin fans. With all your cubic inches I think I would stay mechanical, now that you have some bling motor mounts hopefully the source of the problem is eliminated.
Edit: HOS your pics didn't show up the first time I looked at them, that fan wouldn't have fit my flange, I am wondering if you have an earlier style waterpump, if that is the case I am 99 percent sure you can bolt up one with a later style. Flowcooler for one makes a improved replacement
bigmookied 05-12-2009, 02:14 PM My buddy has a fan assembly from a PT Cruiser Turbo. Pulls like a mother and required very little fab. Nice thing is the package is small and will fit in under your hood.
Rock Auto had them for under $100 so I am sure a JY will have them for cheap.

jpeater 05-14-2009, 07:31 AM While in the junkyard a month or two ago on a scrounging session I came across a Crown Victoria with an 18" swept blade electric fan. It acts as a secondary in front of the mechanical unit and is mounted in the front of the main fan shroud just behind the radiator. I like the large diameter and simplicity of the circular shroud for ease of modification and mounting but the 2 speed motor was a bit weak compared to the Taurus 3 speed.
From what I have found the motors between the two units (Crown Vic and Taurus) are for the most part interchangeable and the Taurus motor will bolt directly to the CV shroud. Major difference is that the CV motor used a triangular coupler from the motor shaft to the blades. There are two styles I came across, one was a press fit to the shaft and the other mounted to a double D style keyed shaft. I had hell trying to get the triangle piece off the motor shaft and since they are cast they break easily when using junkyard available prying tools.
I haven't gone back yet to try and make it work but if I ever get one off in one piece and onto the Taurus motor shaft it should make for a hell of an electric fan with the big 18" swept blades and three speeds to pull major amounts of air. I have ample room between the motor and radiator so I haven't measured the overall stackup yet, but it appears to be less than 5" that is the measurement of the Mark VIII style fans that use a 17" s-blade.

I'm liking the hell our of my Taurus unit from the Chicago warehouse. I got a MRK8 from the same source sitting in the garage if you want to "borrow" it. I'll probably need it in the future, but right now its collecting dust, and at the rate I've been going, you could get a couple good years out of it before I wanted a replacement :flipoff2:
Reports are that the MRK8 units move even more air than the Taurus.
larboc@hotmail.com 05-14-2009, 11:13 AM My mk8 is a few inches dia larger than a taurus fan and moves a stupid amount of air. You will want to get the mk8 fan that is actually 2 speed. Some, like mine, use a controler for anything but full tilt.
If you are having issues of clearing the water pump with the fan motor, find the two fan setup from a windstar. Should straddle it nicely. That is most likley what ill have to end up running when i get my two cor rad

Taurus for sure, they are a two speed,so you can wire them to a three way switch (low ,high , thermo switch(25 bucks at schmucks)
Rock Tractor 05-14-2009, 01:53 PM I have ran the Taurus and the mark8, curently running the mark8. The thing I really like about the mark8 is that when you trim the shroud it sits nicely into the radiator.
rugburn 05-15-2009, 06:05 AM Taurus fan.
I got mine from Seabass years ago and he hooked me up with a trick harness as well as anice schematic.
It was plug and play dude......
Give him a PM and you won't regret it.
