: saginaw pitman arm ?

I'm slowly doing my scout p/s conversion. I found a flat 6.5" sag pitman arm off a 77 Nova ($10). When I compared it to the stock scout arm I found that the hole for the TRE is smaller. Any suggestions? I am contemplating getting the std pitman arm TRE and having my pitman arm machined but then I really don't save much over just buying a new flat pitman arm for $68. What about filling it with weld and then getting it machined for a FJ40 TRE? Then I don't have to change the threads on the tie rod.

Having it reamed would be easy. Welding it and then having it reamed for the cruiser would be easy too. However, I have never seen a cruiser Draglink fit a saginaw conversion without some sort of modification.

(BTW, a draglink goes from the Steering box to the knuckle, Tie Rod goes from steering knuckle to steering knuckle.. )

Thanks for the clarification (never have gotten which rod is which). Anyway, with the scout box, I plan on cutting the drag link in half, sleeving it and welding it, since it needs to be about 3 to 4" longer. I think I'll sleeve the tie rod at the same time just for good measure. I've got an aquala double arm. What about welding concerns since the arm is cast?

A Jeep TRE should fit the saginaw taper and I can buy those locally for about $12 so you can probably do the same. These have a 11/16" RH or LH thread. Since you are cutting and welding the drag link to make it longer, get a section of 11/16" threaded drag link or tie rod from the local junk yard to use for the saginaw side. Should cost you less then $10 for that and a grand total of about $22.

Ken,
I have a couple of different saginaw pitman arms and a puller so don't go cutting yet! I also just got a good FJ60 tie rod and draglink so my draglink I am useing now will work for you, it has metric on one end SAE on the other( it was built for a saginaw conversion kit) and I have a few different TRE's laying around so I think we can work somthing out!

The '74 - '79 Wagoneer pitman arms work very well on the Scout Saginaw boxes. They are nearly flat and have plenty of meat on the drag-link end.

They are big on the TRE but too big for most Chevy car tierod ends(that fit in the small draglink). 1 ton TRE's fit the taper in the pitman arm...

Brett..I will double check this weekend, but I am pretty sure that an ES461 TRE fits the Waggoneer pitman arm. The ES461 has 11/16" threads but has a wide tapered shaft. The one-ton TREs have enormous threaded shafts, but the tapered shaft, is not that much larger than other SAE units. And, of course, if the hole in the arm is too large, it is easy to weld it in and machine a new hole with the correct diameter and taper.
