Polly or Aluminum?

Foam or no Foam?

I went Al and ripped the foam out before I ever filled it...Works great. I don't even think that I will fill it with the oil containers- I never hear it sloshing!

Mines a poly, and I had some plastic crap let loose and clog my fuel filter when it was new. Not a problem if you are on the trail, easy fix in a short period of time.. big problem if you are on the line in the mud pit at the Top Truck Challenge. Got 10th place because of it.  :(

Other than that, I had the pickup tube fall off on me this weekend. Truck just died and of course you don't think about the pickup tube falling off, but after checking the filter and changing the pump, it was the only thing left. Luckily, one of my buddies has skinny enough arms he reached in and picked it up off the bottom of the tank and we got it reattached.

I bought the poly mostly because of the price.

What's the deal with the polies? Why do they warp on the top? Is it from heat or the owners tieing them down too tight?

Ive been slowly researching the cells for a few weeks and have some questions...

Does the large "d" ring filler caps seal tightly? I see exspensive add on kits to install other types of fillers, seems by the time you do that you could have a nice alum tank with a threaded type filler.....

ANy other web sites for just fuel cells. They gotta make other sizes and designs...

I know there are threads on the high pressues pumps, but how are you guys dealing with the return lines and vent hoses and other stuff....

The D-ring cap seals good. I just cant stand the Poly cells. That sagging center 1st looks shitty, 2nd it just doesnt seem safe to have a collapsing fuel tank. Im pretty sure im going with a 15 gal aluminum one from Summit with sender for GM. If you want a pimp ass custom one, check out www.campbellent.com . I will not run foam, but that is just from bad experiences (during the middle of a rockcrawling comp is not the time to find out the foam separates) clogs up a filter real fast. Good luck!

I run an AL from i believe Triangle. Its 16 gallons or so, foam filled, and pimp looking. I had a poly one on deck, but the AL come with mounting tabs on them. 4 bolts and Im done, versus building a cradle and coming up with straps that look like sheeeit in the end anyway.

Oh yeah, the foam clogged me up a couple times (1st time out), but eversince, good to go.

I've got a 20gallon Triangle Engineering aluminum fuel cell and it is BLING BLING. The finish on it is awesome, very nice looking. I got it from Jegs.

Got mine from Jeg's as well...Aluminum, 0-100ohm sender, 15 gal, powder coated red, sump on bottom rear of tank...About $220 or so.

Ran a -10/-6 adapter to a Earls' pre-filter...Then to a Mallory 60FI pump....No foam problems to report yet.

i just bought a new al fuel cell for my fj40/buggy project and i got an rci street rod cell. it measures 30"wide x 12" tall x 9" deep. i like it because it holds 15 gallons and it sits more up right that other cells and it is only 9" deep front to back so it does not take up much space. after i got mine a buddy ordered one for the back of his jeep and it fits perfectly and he still has lots of room in the rear for tools, etc. summit sells them and the pn/ is rci-2161a i think.

This is not at all a joke.

Get a keg...have a kegger...dont return keg..build a trick fuel cell that will be the envy of everyone else on the trail.

If you are pressed for room get a pony keg. This set up can be made to work well for little money...and come on its just pimp

I've heard of that and even have a friend with a street-rod who uses a keg for his fuel cell. I even had a kegger last weekend and have the empty keg sitting in the backyard. But what is required to do that? I assume you need some sort of cap for where you would normally tap it since that is where, I assume, you would fill it from??? And a keg is a LOT of fuel! I am kind of setting my max limit at 15 gallons because I don't need that much fuel and am trying to somewhat conserve on weight. Granted, I wouldn't need to fill it all the way up but then I would have fuel sloshing away from the pickup line all the time. I'm thinking that it's not for me in this case, but am curious as to what specifically people do to turn them into fuel cells anyway.

Oh, and out of curiosity, how much did everyone pay for their Triangle cells?

I thought about using a Keg. I have 5 sitting at home. They are tough, stainless, and cool looking. I was looking at using fuel cell plates that have caps, vent, sending unit and gauge all in one.

Problems - all parts were going to cost around $500, YMMV, they were too big to fit under bed, and getting it all set up was going to be a real hassle. Went with a 21 gal Al cell from Summit for less than $300 complete.

By the way, the standard keg available here in the states is 15.5 gallons.

If you know were to look you can find these aluminum ones from Germany. They were outlawed in 1970 so there hard to find.

Yes most domestic beer kegs are 15.5 gallons but many are 50L. There is only 13.2 gallons in 50L . US brewery's use a 31 gallon barrel and import brewery's use hectoliters. It very hard to tell the difference.

Yeah, but my reply was simpler. :flipoff2:

Typically in college all we could afford was the cheap stuff, which typically comes in 15.5 stainless. Thats what I have an abundance of. We did count that a typical keg has around 115 beers in it, depending on the pour and the foam.

If you want to be a real cheapskate (like me), do what I did.

Most boats have aluminum tanks in them. If you look around, you can probably find a boat junkyard. The one we got, we got for nothing, just for taking it out.

It was a 36 gallon tank, so we cut it in half and made two 18 gal. tanks out of it. Cost about $20 for fittings, etc.

If u want a custome size tank talk to sillyneck. He built me one and it turned out great fit like a glove and he is extremly reasonable on price. He also baffled the tank and put fittings and what everu want on it. Silly is the guy to talk to.

Now thats using your noodle. I say spend the money you saved on . But then I am a drunk.

Hoping to put the new fuel cell in next week. Gonna build a cradle which will hold it and my batteries under the bed.

I will try to post pictures after it is done.
