: Trying to find a grinder not made in China
Aggie007 05-14-2009, 04:36 PM Made in China:
Milwaukee
Ryobi
Rigid
Porter Cable
Dewalt
Craftsman
Hitachi
Bosch
Makita
Sucks I can't run to the local HD or lowes and pick up a 4.5" grinder not made in China.
Any ideas...I am still looking at Metabos to see where they are made.
maxyedor 05-14-2009, 04:38 PM Hilti maybe?
Why no Chinese made grinders? Aside from Ryobi and Craftsman all those are good brands and should hold up plenty long.
GmManDan 05-14-2009, 04:46 PM Have you tryed Harbor freight? J/k
Metabo makes good tools and so does Hilti

I don't think Fein makes stuff in China... I think it's all German. I'd check to be sure and they cost a fortune!
solarpower 05-14-2009, 04:48 PM Metabo used to be made in germany...but there grinders have changed recently and could be made elsewhere now.
OKMudn 05-14-2009, 06:52 PM My vote is for Metabo also
jamscal 05-14-2009, 08:15 PM +10 on Metabo.
Mine's German...a year old.
pneufab 05-14-2009, 08:18 PM The only Metabo grinder that is imported (read: Chinese)(to the best of my knowledge) is the W6-115.
The W8-115 on up are all still made in Germany.

M CRISIS 05-14-2009, 08:33 PM Yup, most everything has gone to chiner!
I can get you a Metabo for about a C note + frt if you're interested. PM me (with your zip) for a quote if you'd like some help getting one.
Valkyrie Rider 05-15-2009, 04:08 PM I forgot about Metabo, but they would certainly top my list! That is all we had when I went to school for welding and they were AWESOME grinders! Took lots of abuse and kept going for a LONG, LONG time from what the instructors said.
1TON73K5 05-15-2009, 08:32 PM What about Snap On or Matco, or MAC, are their grinders made in China?
trkklr77 05-15-2009, 09:05 PM go to a pawn shop or flea market.
Aggie007 05-15-2009, 10:59 PM I ended up ordering a Metabo today. I get it Tuesday. I went with the W8-115 quick change 4.5" grinder.
AIRZUKI 05-16-2009, 02:08 PM I can walk into Home Depot and get a 5" Makita grinder made in Canada:D not really a mini grinder though
BigBlue&Goldie 05-17-2009, 01:13 PM I'll throw out a +11 on the Metabo
2slo4u 05-19-2009, 09:01 AM After burning out the gears in 3-4 HFs, I picked up one of these. Worked great, so now I got 4 in the garage and you can lay on these things and they keep running. Don't know if its chinnese.

I have one of those as well in my collection. Loud as hell, but I can't break the damn thing. One of the best grinders for the price that i've found.

I have used these before..... loud as hell.... not very smooth, but they hold up well. I would easily pick one of these over a DeWalt.
Overdosed 05-19-2009, 04:51 PM What is wrong with harbor freight grinders? I have a zillion miles on mine and it still works just fine... 12 bucks too :D
2003_ram 05-19-2009, 06:14 PM Rigid? Just a thought.
Overdosed 05-20-2009, 03:35 AM Rigid? Just a thought.
Pretty sure Rigid is not made in America... If that is the OP's goal.
+75 on Metabo. IIRC they do have some models w a deadman switch now, too, but might only be 7".
fairlane_68 05-24-2009, 05:36 PM I've got an American Made Dewalt. I'm not even going to guess how old it is, but it was left out in the rain a few years back, and the bearings have just recently started to squeak.
