Branman 05-15-2009, 05:11 PM Dang looks good. Idk but is the frame boxed? That engine might twist that frame up like a pretzel? Thanks Brandon B.
4XFORD 05-15-2009, 10:13 PM http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/0322091615.jpg
That sucks.....glad you didn't really do that.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/sittinonitsown.jpg
Looks like you've got enough engine to ground loop that thing. :D
Cougar67 05-25-2009, 07:20 PM Any updates?
popeye123 05-26-2009, 12:50 AM i set the body on and put a couple bolts in to check clearances think i may need to run a body lift to keep carb under hood unfortunatly. going to fab in the front springs this week if all goes well
SAY789 05-28-2009, 09:06 PM Sickk Dude Those Older 429's Are The Best Especially For Some Rpm. You Oughta Make A Shaker Scoop To Bolt On The Carb That Would Be Different lol
popeye123 07-13-2009, 02:01 PM its been awhile since i posted anything on this because i have not done anything, but i was able to do a little trading with some cash to pickup this set of sanderson headers. on the sanderson website they cost $475.00 i got them for 1 demon carb + $100.00 cash they look brand new no carbon in the pipes just a few scratches
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/headers.jpg
TroyM 07-18-2009, 04:33 PM those rear springs are gonna wrap up like a motherfucker
better plan on building a ladder bar or adding leafs to the pack to stiffen it up
or link it:)
LegendKiller89 07-18-2009, 09:20 PM I'd link that if it was mine.
IROK Cherokee 07-18-2009, 09:55 PM Yup 4 link the rear and if the frame isn't boxed yet.....DO IT
popeye123 07-19-2009, 12:19 AM those rear springs are gonna wrap up like a motherfucker
better plan on building a ladder bar or adding leafs to the pack to stiffen it up
or link it:)
that is definatly something i will be keeping a eye for when its done.
if i had the extra money i probable would link it but i don't so im not gonna:D i just the damn thing on the trail!!
zachis4wheeling 07-21-2009, 01:45 AM Definitely gonna keep an eye on this one.....
What kind of wheeling you gonna be doing mainly with this thing? Are those 42s next to it?
popeye123 07-21-2009, 05:56 PM Definitely gonna keep an eye on this one.....
What kind of wheeling you gonna be doing mainly with this thing? Are those 42s next to it?
no those are my buddies 38's for his vintage bronco, but i will be running 39" iroks.
as far as what kind of wheeling im just trying to set it up for what ever gets in my way :D sand, mud, trails, rocks. i just want it reliable is my main thing
45acp 07-21-2009, 06:01 PM Get a traction bar on there before you ever fire the motor.
This is (was) a fresh set of junkyard 4 door leaves and a stock 4 liter- made it two trips
popeye123 07-21-2009, 06:37 PM what is your setup?
45acp 07-22-2009, 04:53 AM Nothing special, 4door leaves stock shackles spring over rear, early Bronco coils w/extended radius arms up front, fullwidth HP44/9" 36iroks wheelbase stretched to 108".
The rear leaves seem to last SOA if you go easy on it, but if you're a throttle jockey (or in your case have a real motor) then they wont make it for long without a traction bar.
CESCO 07-22-2009, 08:24 AM I have been eyeing up an explorer that I was thinking about doing same thing with... I will be watching you build to see how it goes. I wasn't sure if I want to put the time into it or not... nice start with it
popeye123 07-22-2009, 11:52 AM 45acp i want to say i have 4 leaf pack so that will help a little and depending on how the truck sits after i get the front mounted i might put a AAL in the pack so i will see what happens.
cesco, the main reason im builbing this is cause i have a family of four and my kids love to wheel and having the 4-doors will keep there muddy feet off my seat when crawling over into the back seat and the second reason is you dont see alot of explorers on the trail so im trying to be a little different
WHITE RHINO 07-22-2009, 05:21 PM thats what my 63's looked like after snapping the second leaf in half, now i have freshys haha
45acp 07-22-2009, 08:33 PM Mine are 4 leaf packs, i simply took out the overload. I also had the longer anti wrap perches. AAL would help but i promise big motor + throttle = W'ed leaves. Keep in mind i am about 1/3 your horsepower and only on 36's. Try it and see, i promise not to say i told you so. :D
popeye123 07-22-2009, 10:38 PM i promise not to say i told you so. :D
thanks i appreciate that. i never said i didnt belive what you were saying it all stuff i need to keep an eye out for when i get it all put together and do my test and tune
popeye123 10-09-2009, 01:19 PM i picked up this hp 60 with sky manufacturing hi-steer arms on it
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/60-2.jpg
got it sitting under the explorer just gotta figure out where to mount the brackets any hints
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/spring.jpg
45acp 10-09-2009, 03:47 PM Just about every type of Explorer SAS you can think of (http://www.explorerforum.com/forums//showthread.php?t=237376)
Most of the guys that go with front leaves either fully outboard them or partially building the mount half into the frame.
Just some advice- move the front as far forward as you can. Are you keeping the box or going full hydro?
popeye123 10-25-2009, 01:37 PM got the front axle mounted, i still have gussets and boxing the ends of stuff
i made these things to go under and up the side of the frame
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/framebrkts.jpg
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/done.jpg
the angle of the shackle is more than i was going for, so i might end up changing it later
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/angle-2.jpg
popeye123 10-29-2009, 12:38 AM been getting down and dirty this week 8-) got the springs mounted, king pins rebuilt(damn torqing the kingpins down about gave me a hernia), got the axle put back together enough to put the tires on :-X :-X still got a list as long as my crew cab but I'm working on it
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/side.jpg

http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/front.jpg
section525 01-06-2010, 05:48 PM That's coming along great! What springs did you use in the front? 44044s? I have pretty much the same setup, but with a 5.0L and 37s. I'm using 5-leaf Wagoneer springs and they're pretty much flat. I've been thinking about swapping to the Ranchos.

yes im useing the 44044's they seem to flex ok(from useing a floor jack and a 6x6 to the most un-safe point) even though they are 2 1/2" lift spring they sit flat/almost flat but thats with a big block
sold some parts yesterday so im gonna be ordering my radiator this weekso i can fab that in...any one ever use a speedway motors radiator? good, bad, or ugly?
also waiting to get the bender set-up so i can get the cage built. but i still can't decide on a exo-cage or internal. i havent seen to many exo-cages on explorers that i like...any input?

snowracer 07-31-2011, 09:47 PM look good man really like it and kinda makes me wich i did not sell my first gen exploder now
loudpyps 08-02-2011, 09:04 AM how wide is this from wms to wms? or from outside of tires? i have a 86 fullsize bronco on tons and 38's been thinkin about puttin my 94 explorer body on to make the body size more trail worthy
popeye123 08-02-2011, 12:11 PM how wide is this from wms to wms? or from outside of tires? i have a 86 fullsize bronco on tons and 38's been thinkin about puttin my 94 explorer body on to make the body size more trail worthy
i origanlly tried to put the Xplorer on my 79' bronco frame but it just wouldnt work out now the 86 might be different also if you have a 2 door Xplorer things might be different
if you wait a couple of more days ill get measurements to outside of tire but i have them off right now the axle itself is 69.5" to wms to wms
86 slo-vo 08-02-2011, 12:58 PM would you buy the 44044's again? im going to br putting the 60 under mine here in a few weeks and need to decide on what im going to use.
loudpyps 08-02-2011, 01:54 PM i see, well i have a four door like yours, what was the issue with yours not fitting, mine will be pretty much straight crawler/trail ride so some hackin away at the body would be ok, no rush on that measurement its just sittin in the garage half ripped apart anyways
popeye123 08-02-2011, 05:46 PM would you buy the 44044's again? im going to br putting the 60 under mine here in a few weeks and need to decide on what im going to use.
with out driving it yet im not sure but i used a fork lift to flex it out a little and they seem like they will flex ok, i seen quite a few people used them for a sfa swap over on the explorerforums.com so i looked into them and they are a 2.5" lift spring for a full size jeep so i took the chance they would handle the weight of the BB 429.the springs at ride heigth are almost flat so i hope im ok.
slo-vo iv been watching you getting crazy with the plasma and i must say you are giving me thoughts of loosing some sheet metal keep up the good work!
i see, well i have a four door like yours, what was the issue with yours not fitting, mine will be pretty much straight crawler/trail ride so some hackin away at the body would be ok, no rush on that measurement its just sittin in the garage half ripped apart anyways
to start the frame was to short now if you clearanced like slo-vo no problem then after i extended the frame i had parts of the body touching the frame (under the back seat) while i had a 6-8" gap in others (the very back) whitch i guess if i wanted to bad enough i could have made it work but i thought it would just be better to use the explorer frame
86 slo-vo 08-05-2011, 10:44 AM Thanks, I think I might try the 4 door leaves up front for now and see what happens. If that experiment fails I'm going to look into the 44044's.
Yours is looking good also, can't wait to see some action pics. What size are those tires?
popeye123 08-14-2011, 01:28 PM just been trying to get things knocked off the list thought i would give up some pics.
i still plan on securing the hoses better, the other day i had to go back thru and tighten bunch of the hoses cause it was bleeding all over
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/hoses.jpg
plug wires, distributer, fuel pump, and a tight squeeze on a 429(damn I'm almost out of room)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/engine.jpg
got the radiator mounts made up yesterday but i have to pull it 1 more time to clearance for hoses then ill get the trans cooler mounted and fan
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/radiator.jpg
popeye123 08-14-2011, 01:31 PM hey slo-vo those are 39" iroks i do have some hummer wheels that i will some day put some pitbull rockers on iv been thinking about 42's but ill see what happens
86 slo-vo 08-14-2011, 04:23 PM 39.5-42 is my plan, just depends what i can find for the right price.
how far is your axle pushed forward? im dicking with mine right now trying to figure out where to put it.
popeye123 08-18-2011, 02:17 PM damn (click on the pic)
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/th_running.jpg (http://s37.photobucket.com/albums/e61/Popeye123/explosion/?action=view¤t=running.mp4)
still got to clean up alot but it fired up really quick for sitting for the 2 years iv had the motor and the 2 year old gas according to the gauge it had 80lbs of oil pressure.
popeye123 08-18-2011, 02:18 PM 39.5-42 is my plan, just depends what i can find for the right price.

AllGoNoShow 08-25-2011, 03:08 PM What headers are you using?
fordtrucknut77 08-25-2011, 04:04 PM look like l&l shortys for a 78 fullsize but i could be wrong?
popeye123 08-27-2011, 08:25 AM What headers are you using?

Big79'Terry 08-27-2011, 10:22 AM It's about time my FOMOCO brotha':D.
popeye123 09-01-2011, 12:30 PM took it in for some exaust last week and measured for shocks the other day it seems to flex ok, mounted the rear shocks last night they sure did take the bouncy out of the springs, can't wait to hit TSF this weekend for a little test-n-tune

Tillamook State Forest...great place for wheeling.
bronkho31 09-07-2011, 08:42 AM Sweet build. I guess I dont feel so bad about the room I have in my ranger. That 428 is alot wider than my 351w. But after the EFI shit I have on mine I cant fit under the stock hood...
Southern Yankee 09-07-2011, 06:20 PM Sweet build, but I want to see some video of it in action.
popeye123 11-02-2011, 11:05 AM no tech just some poser pics at tsf on oct.16th iv had it out a couple of times now. the first time i was a big pansie seeing how everything worked, this trip i was a little better but i still was on the sissy side of things but without a cage yet im still cautious.
i must say im pretty happy with it.the 44044's(front springs) work great. the hydro has to be one of my favorite things, one down fall is that it does not turn very tight especially when locked in 4wd
