so I bored out my throttlebody saturday and i removed all the sensors and didnt screw with any of them while they were off, but now I'm having starting problems. The jeep will start and it runs fine, but sometimes it takes a couple cranks to actually start. I have been reading and think its my maf sensor. any suggestions?

I know in most cases if the MAF goes bad you can check it by unplugging it and driving it and it should run better but may rev kinda high or shift hard (if auto) nothing to do any harm. Unplugging it makes the computer think its getting more air then normal, you may get a check engine light but it should turn off after you plug it back in a start it again and drive it. I have dealt with more Chevy MAF then Jeep and this works so maybe this will help you.

do the newer jeep 4.0's even have a MAF sensor? I know that my 93 4.0 dose NOT have one.

To be honest I am not sure, I am pretty sure the some years Grands and liberty's do but I am not sure about XJs YJs or TJs. I thought the newer ones had one or maybe a air temp sensor right next to the intake near the fuel rail kinda, again I am not sure. I have a 94 XJ and I am know it doesn't have one either. I was just saying how I have checked if they are bad in the past, mostly on other makes.

im pretty sure its a maf sensor on the throttle body. Its a 99 so its on the edge of when wranglers started to get more electronics. So you saying that by unplugging it will pretty much narrow my search if it still doesnt start.

Yes it should work, by unplugging a MAF it sends the computer into a default mod and it thinks its getting way more air. You can even start it then unplug it and see what happens like I said you may get the check engine light but it should turn off when you plug it back in start it and drive it. I cant guarantee it will work but it will not harm your motor by doing this. If its running bad cause of the MAF and you unplug it, it should run better and drive better right away. Driving with the maf unplugged usually will be kinda hard on things like shifting if its auto and may even drive different if its manual it tends to rev higher then normal and its bad on gas you will lose a few mpg.
