: HJ 47 (2H) Help! My glow plugs won't work!
Justcruzin 05-18-2009, 08:48 AM Hey! I'm new to the forum (sorta) and I just got this cool HJ 47 from Aussie. It's got a 2H (diesel) in there and for some reason, the glow plugs don't seem to...glow... I have replaced all 6 of them and it did'nt improve any. It was my first time at replacing glow plugs so I might have done something not quite the right way but I don't think so. It says in the Toyota service manual that, if the "glow plug on" indicator goes off after less than 15 sec., there's probably a short circuit either in one of the plugs or at the controler. I unplugged the lead to all six glow plugs and still have the same trouble so I'm thinking it might originate from the controler. Does anybody here have any idea/suggestions on this? And where would that controler be located??
Thanks for your help !

You are using them correctly? You have to turn the key anti clockwise to activate the plugs then wait till the green light goes off.
Otherwise,as LukeZero pointed out, there is some very very long threads on MUD.
You can satisfy yourself the plugs can work by running a jumper lead from the positive terminal on the battery to a non insulated part of the bus bar that connects the glow plugs.
Hold the jumper on there for about 15 seconds, then start
orangefj45 05-18-2009, 08:15 PM my hj47 troopie has always been a little lazy when it comes to the glow plugs. u sually i have to cycle the plugs 2-3 times in the morning if it's been cold out the previous night before they'll fire the engine.
from what i hear, that's pretty common.

If i remember right its usually the relay that goes poof... around here most just do "glow-button" aka run wires to nomal relay and then put button inside the cabin for it....

Got the right voltage plugs in there George?
They do get slower over the years though.
My 1HZ glow plugs will only work when the engine is cranking. An auto electrician says its the timer.
Toyota want $1130AUD. I looked inside and its just an old fashioned circuit board ,about as complicated as a $10 transistor radio.:D
Roodogs says he can do them for $735.
I tried a used one and still didnt work. Now I have 2 timers that Im not sure about.:shaking:
Im thinking/hoping it may be a relay

scrap the timer, just throw in simple relay and button... button down -> plugs glow, button up -> plugs dont glow...
Justcruzin 05-19-2009, 01:27 PM Thanks for replying guys! Appreciate it! Some good suggestions here!

Thanks LukeZero. Been on there and LOTS of knowledge is right! Probably can/will find something regarding a similar problem...

Being from Australia, I guess mine is a little different. The key can only be put in/taken out when key switch is counter clockwise all the way. Then, the yellow "glow plug on" indicator comes on when you turn the key clockwise 2 clicks. (first is ACC, second is glow plugs ON). Indicator comes on for 3 or 4 seconds then out...
On the other hand, I will definitely try the "hot lead direct to the glow plugs" trick! If they work, I might very well go with the "glow button" outfit. What capacity relay do you use (as far as amps go)? Thanks!

Yeah Ive been told that, but I like the factory set up
It takes about 3 seconds in winter and 2 seconds in summer.:grinpimp:
I have a simple push button set up on my 73 series and it takes 10 seconds.
I hate losing 7 seconds every day:shaking::flipoff2:

Weird ,because how I explained it is how the other aussie 47s work.
I know different years have the super glow setup ,so maybe the ignition is also different .
You dont have a mysterious big button on the dash by any chance.,it may have already been converted?

NOPE, It does'nt have A mysterious button, it's got tons of mysterious buttons in the dash.!! :D
No, seriously, since it's been outfitted with a camper type unit in the back (originally was a cab and chassis) it has a switch for the electric fridge, also has one for the "after market A/C", one for the under-the-hood-engine-driven-air-compressor, another for the dual battery separator.......:shaking:
Let's see...Is that it...Yeah, I think that's it...
At least that's what the guy who sold it to me said those switches were for... For all I know, one of them might be a glow plug by-pass that he did'nt know of... When I bought I from him, down in Fla, he had just imported it from Oz so, who knows...
One of those days, I'm gonna have to take pictures of it and figure out how to up-load them on here to show you guys... It's pretty unic...

eunuch? Why ya gotta go and drag Nolen into this?:shaking:
