Is there anybody that would be able to help me with replacing both front axle seals? I pretty much know nothing about working on a solid axle. Is it something that i would be able to do at my house? Any guess on how long it would take?

You going to have to take apart the entire axle, including removing the carrier. Rotors, hubs, spindles and axle shafts will all have to come off to be able to knock the old axle seals out (actually out of the tube into the diff case, hence the necessary removal of the carrier).

Not terrible hard, if you are mechanically inclined, and have a friend who is as well, it should take a couple hours.

yea its not that bad of a job, just set everything in the order you took it off, youll need a wheel bearing nut socket to take the nut off, or use a hamer and a punch, but give it a whirl, if your gonna wheel, its something your gonna need to know anyways

for you it will take a full day because will not be sure of yourself and will take extra time to organize and verify parts, order, dissasembly and re assembly.

for a some one like me, 3hrs ish if i can keep on task and off pbb.

its really a simple job tearing everything apart to get to them... its just putting them back together the proper way is where first timers get lost. its time consuming, boring and tedious.. ive torn apart so many 1/2 ton axles it aint funny. i have to do mine too soon :(

is there a write up anywhere on tearing apart and putting together 1/2 ton front ends? maybe if im feeling generous ill do one with a bunch of pictures... i think mine are missing parts though. neither side of mine has that big spring thats supposed to be in there

It's not a bad time to do balljoints if you have any question about them either.

abig84 was talking about 1/2 ton axles, and mentioned he had to rebuild his soon, (sad face) and since I know he is running 10 bolts under an S10, I assumed that was what he was referring to.

Maybe the springs in the lock outs. But they wouldn't work worth a shit without them.

big spring?? wtf are you talking about???

See! Its missing out of your axle too!:)

Every other 10 bolt I tore apart had this spring that would stand like 3 inches tall when stood up. It was a real soft spring that went just between the inner lockout and the outer lock nut... I never put them back

This is retarded.

Original Poster, please post up what front axle you have, I am going to assume its a 10 bolt, Dana 44 or 60.

Now, This SPRING Abig84 is talking about...the only spring I can think of that he might be referrring to is the spring which disengages the lockout when the lockout is selected to free. BIG84, is that the one?

Or maybe idiot just stuck a random ass spring in there before you got the axle to fuck with you....:D

Or......

either way it doesnt realy matter what axle he has. its all the same amount of work to replace the seals.

i dont know what the hell it is... i think it might be the spring your talking about but i have found these BEHIND the lock outs on a few axles. i just went out to the garage to take a picture of one i pulled out of my bucket-o-10bolt parts
