I am looking at an 88 sami, the shift shifts into gear fine but has alot of play when ingear like when in 1st or 3rd it feels like its in N
Is this an easy bushing fix or major? I have repaired toyotas with this problem by repaceing the shifter bushing. Thanks

Most likely the shift bolt broke. Easy fix. Take the shifter out of the gear box There will be a small bolt at the 6:00 position on the tranny where the shifter mounted(pointing to rear of truck). Thats the shifter bolt that breaks off. Make sure you find the broken piece (may fall down in tranny but you can use magnet to get) and put new bolt in.

PETROWORKS has these bolts in stock for about $3.00 and the bushing for about $7.00, and yes this is similar to the toy bushing. the hardest part about replacing these parts is getting the carpet out of the way! www.petroworks.com

Try this...
Before you pull out your shifter. Try pulling up on the plate (with the three 10mm bolts) Pull it up as far as you can. If you have a magnetic thingy that can reach into tight places get that handy. Slowly start to pull up on the shifter watching for a little broken piece of the bolt. See if you can grab it before pulling the whole thing apart first.
The reason is mine didn't fall into the transmission until I pulled the whole shifter out. Luckly it just fell below and I had to use a magnetic stick to get it out but all it had to do was roll forward about 3" and it would have been to far to get out from the top.

Before you get too far, here is some more advice. I recently did this fix, it's real easy, except for the bolt extraction. My bolt was broken inside the grooves. So once I got the head out, I had to take another bolt to push out the non-threaded end.
I used a "Coarse, Class 8.8, M8-1.25x12MM". These bolts should be found at any parts store. Make sense?
