Anyone transplanted this engine in a SWB?

Does this newer generation Ford V8 share the 5.0L bellhousing pattern? And will it easily accept say a SM435?

I'm thinking this may be a good alternative to a 4.3 in a Flattie.

I have a bud who bought a 96 Stang for parts and it has a 60K mile 4.6 in it that i can pick up cheap, harness and computer would be included in the deal. wondering if i should grab it up for $400.

I can't answer anything except that with the low mileage on it, that sounds like on Hell if a deal! Grab that fawker :D

big fat heads on that engine. Take some measurements on your engine compartment before buying it. It would likely have to set up high in the compartment, necessitating hood and firewall mods

Good point, OHC engines have that issue. If it fits, should be a nice engine. GM 5.3 with aluminum heads wouldn't be too shabby either.

it's only a 2 valve motor. those f-ckers aren't too fast...they do run well and are reliable....but the 4.3 will fit better and can perform better given a couple of do dads.

now if it was a 4 valve 4.6 :D wooohoooo that would be sweet.

anyways good luck....and I don't care what people say about fittament. I've put all kinds of motors in all kinds of vehicles and I've found that everything "fits" anywhere. next step is a big block samari :D

I don't think it does, I think it's only common with the other modular motors, but if you find out differently, be sure to let us know.

The motors are awfully wide, wider than the 5.0L, but all aluminum, and I thought the 4.6L in the Tbird had excellent power. Maybe not the low end torque you'd be after, but HP, overall, was adequate. Not to mention all the performance mods
available.

The motor has low down power, but not like a truck motor does. If you put new cams in it ( probably custom) that were more for torque, it should run great.

I can't remember how wide it is, but my 4.6 DOHC in my Cobra is wider than a Hemi. And those are prety darn big. It would be a tough fit in a Jeep.

But I think the SOHC would not be hard to fit. And for $400.00, I would grab it whether you are using it in you vehicle or not. You can always resell it to the mustang guys.

And the DOHC would not be good for Off-roading. Not enough overall toque, and very little down low. That engine goes crazy at 3200RPM and up. Below it is sleeping.

Cobras are cool. There's a guy that works in my office that has a beautiful '96 Mystic Cobra. He baby's it like you wouldn't believe. He bought it new, and so far he's only put 20K miles on it. I finally talked him into giving me a ride today, and he let me drive it! Damn I like those cars!

The 4.6L are as big as a 460 on the exterior, so you can use the mesurement off a 460 to see how tight it will be. Also the 4.6 has 3 or 4 bolt in common with a 5.0L (including the dowel pins), and I have heard of racers using T5s with 5.0 bellhousings behind them, but road racing and truck pounding are different things, and I wouldn't want my drivetrain held together by 3 bolts. If it were me I would buy the engine, find a 5 speed out of a 4.6L or 5.4L truck and the adaper/transfer case of your choice. One tip, change the valve guide seals while the engine is out. They go out at 100K-120K like clockwork. I wish I changed mine when I swaped engines (I swaped a 94 4.6 for my 92 4.6 in my Crown Vic, so I don't have any swap tips for other chassies)

Mustsangs got 4.6's in 96. Crown vics got 4.6's in 92. Lincons got em in 91 in the Town Car. I take it personal that you dont think I know what the fuck I have in my car after I plainly stated that I swaped engines myself BITCH.

Bullshit! Crown Vics had 4.6Ls since '92, in fact they were the first car that the engine was available in.

The 4.6L is actually wider than a 460. The bellhousing pattern is specific to modular engines and the only all aluminum SOHC are in the 2002-up Explorer.

So to answer your question NO a 5.0 bellhousing will NOT bolt up to a 4.6. But if you got a 4.6 you could bolt it up to any version of the 4.6, the 5.4 and even the 6.8. mmmm V10 4 Runner.
