Does any body still sell hard parts for repairing Saginaw steering gear boxes?
The box in my YJ is puking at the input seal, and there is too much play at the shaft there to feel comfortable about just resealing it.
I am not that familiar with gear boxes, but I would rather fix mine than just swap it.

Damn near every auto parts store, try NAPA, Partsamerica, autozone...
Or be more specific about the parts. If it's just a leak then get the seal kits. Need ball bearings, or the shaft or piston, then hit the junk yard to find a parts donor.

I tried the parts shop circiut:rolleyes: Do you honstly believe I would be posting here asking about where to find these parts if they were readily available at just any parts house:question:
I am looking for a hard parts rebuild kit, bearings, bushings, etc..
Seal kits are availble from NAPA, but there is so much play at the input shaft, that a new seal will not fix anything.
I tried the wrecking yard circiut also, but J&W wants $150 for a USED GEAR BOX!!! There are so many people doing power steering swaps that they are driving up the cost of the parts.
Example:
I just also replaced my PS pump. J&W wanted $120 for a USED PUMP!!!! I bought a brand new one at NAPA, retail cash for only $70:eek:  Can you say WTF:question:

when I rebuilt mine (back in '91 or 92) I got seals from Ford, ball bearings from the bike shop and didn't need any bushings.
ball bearings on mine were 2 different sizes and they alternate large small.
can't remember much else except it was like putting a puzzle together. The instructions were photocopied from a Ford shop manual.
If you don't have experience with a Saginaw box your best bet is just to get another one. They are very complicated and very easy to FUBAR. Next time you hit the junkyards stay away from the Jeep junkyards. Just about any Saginaw box will work. Pick n pulls are full of full size Jeeps and they work great. I paid $25 for the last couple that I pulled. From what I've heard, everything at J&W is overpriced. Same thing as the Jeep only junkyards here in Colorado.

I am really not too concerned about diving into the pump. I repair intricate diesel fuel pumps at work all the time.
Isn't the input shaft play caused by a worn bushing just inside the input shaft seal? I can't imagine it would be to hard to swap out.

Partsamerica.com will give you a completely rebuilt unit for $150 from a J-10 or YJ, new seals, etc.
You are going to the wrong junk yards, I'm talking pick & pull. I can tell you that J10's, wagoneers, yj's all have saginaw gear boxes. I pulled mine for $15. You shouldn't expect to pay more than $25 from a yard, or break down and get one from partsamerica.com (not sure what the core charge is though).
I'm a bean counter by trade, and I disassembled, resealed and swapped in a 20 year old junk yard box, and my jeep never turned so nicely.

I keep a close eye on the PnPs around here.
My concern with that was I was under the impression that different vehicles came with different ratios in the gear box. I believe all the Jeeps came with the same box, I just don't see too many in the PnPs.

Robert if you want a kit call me at the shop tomorrow and i'll ship you one out. I have everything in stock that you want.
If you want to upgrade instead of just rebuilding then get a J20 Jeep pickup box from around 85. mIt should be a direct swap in and will be the EXACT same thing as a AGR super box. OK maybe not the exact same thing. you won't need the Vasaline:rolleyes:
