I'm not as far along as some others but I figured I better start now cause this summer is going to be the time for big changes to my Burban, I'm building it into a long range tow/expedition vehicle for camping and wheeling trips.

Day 1 October 2006, I found it for 1000.00 from a friend, 228k miles, 350TBI, SM465, NP241, 14bsf, 10b corp

Low is the way to go. Function over form.

Yeah when I first bought the truck thats all I could think about was lifting it, looking back now I wish I hadn't and just done new spring mounts on the rear and 56" springs up front, too late now so I will deal with the arched springs but mount them higher for less lift

Looks good so far, Rear axle looks really nice, did you make that cover?

What tires are you planning on running

Looks like you have access to a waterjet, nice

BadMonkey

When I buy tires again I am thinking some 40 or 42 inch IROKS on 17" steel bead locks
Everything was made by me in my garage and nope I don't have a waterjet, just a little patience a good sized plasma cutter and drill press

Memorial weekend,
Saturday, lazy saturday honey do's
Sunday, rainy but got the garage clean
Monday, worked all day on the 14 bolt ff

Got the diff and pinion assemblys put back together, I'm just gonna run the open diff for now with the OE 4.10 gearset, I will upgrade later to a detroit and 4.56 gears, I like my tires to much to weld it for now.
Raw refurbished parts, some painted, all bead blasted

The turbo on the shelf is also for the burban, someday......
I found another burb that I am trying to get my hands on, its a 90 white 2wd with auto and the TBI 454, I want it mostly for the engine and its got a good body on it, I will prolly use the frame to build the crawler in a few years

I am planning on blasting the frame this week at work then I will start boxing in the frame rails and hopefully I will have the rear suspension and new axle done within the next month, time is scarce and kids are important but when I'm in the garage I tend to haul ass when i have all the parts lined up, I do work at work on breaks and stuff to so usually the small parts travel around with me in my back pack, I do hydraulics full time during the week and also a TIG welder/Machinist for an assault weapons manufacturer in NSL so I have access to a lot of toys for building parts on top of what I have collected for my garage, I found a 10k lb lift for 600.00 what do U think?, would be tight in my garage but I would like to think I will have some property and a proper shop someday.

I was thinking if for some magical reason I broke the rear end it would be nice to have the guts as bright as possible if we had to tear down in the middle of the night on a trail somewhere, what are the 43 sx's running per tire? and I imagine they're bias ply

I also picked this up tonight, I traded the Probe GT for it, I must say the 454 is the first thing in a while to put the stupid fast grin on my face, on the highway cruising like a caddy at 75, stab the gas and watch the needle bury to 95, your brain thinks no way this much steel can move that fast all the while the motor makes it seem so effortless, anywho, I believe its a TH400 auto behind 454, 2wd, and it has a 14 bolt FF in the rear, I plan on making this my tow vehicle for the other burban

i am sorry but wtf are you doing with that 14bff?

you painted shit that you wont see and doesnt need to be painted.

you have it all apart and a welder in hand but you left it open and welded all kinds of stupid shit to the housing instead.

you knocked the lip down a bit and "matched" the cover to it but you didnt even bother to bevel the lip to actualy make a difference when draging it.

come awn dude, i know you can do better that this.

Ahhh and the ignorance comes out, why destroy perfectly good spider gears by half assing a locker, there are plenty to choose from, I have two other 14bff that might need spare diff parts someday

The paint, yeah nobody will see it but why not finish it, I bead blasted all of the parts and if you had read the posts you would know why I painted the guts the ugly flouro yellow

The stupid shit you refer to on the housing are called trusses, they add strength and also provide mounting points for my track bar and anti-wrap bars

Housings not painted yet, ie not done so more grinding is still possible

1 its called the orb of traction not a half assed locker, it doesnt get any better that 100% locked.

2 you will never make enough power to bomb the guts out of a open 14bff.

BadMonkey
05-30-2009, 12:23 AM
The orb of traction that destroys my tires and chirps all the time, no thanks
The kid with the yota across the street welded his and it squeals like brittany spears in heat every time he moves the damn thing,
I'll give it to you, there is no cheaper way to add traction but for the next few months this truck is road bound and I need the OE parts for the spare I have in the backyard

Bomb the guts out of it, not likely, buying another to find it had a nuclear meltdown, hmm its in the back yard

Show only Hmmm, I think you missed the rust holes, smashed passenger side doors, both smashed rear quarter panels, broken grill, broken windshield and other body damage that was aquired from trail use, I like making parts however I see best, just cause its a trail pig doesn't mean it has to be ugly and boring

Oh I got it and I went and saw his build and yes his is a trail pig, I like some of his ideas but the execution is lacking, his build was where I got the idea for the diff cover actually, same thing, nice idea but poor execution, I think I put a little more time and thought into mine and it turns out visually nicer but in the end they do the same thing, If your going to put forth the time to make anything why not have a little pride in your work and make it to the best of your capabilities

Couldn't agree with you more in terms of effort input...at work, on my builds, or any projects for customers, it's always 100%. But, regarding your last post, I don't think you are in a position to say that you worked harder on yours than he did on his...unless he told you that you worked harder than him on it.

At first I thought wtf with the painted internals, then you mentioned being easy to locate in the dark, I'm sure it would help, however, I think I could use that idea to find shit I've walked past 10 times in the shop, while looking for it,

Keep up the good work, should make a cool rig.

BadMonkey

For all I know his took him more time and was harder to build, I dunno what tools he used or how he did it, never said I worked harder I just probably spent more time on it than he did, I think I have prolly 6+ hours into that diff cover at this point and I have plans to make another for a D60 front

Got a little work done tonight, I put new battery terminals on, dousched and topped off the batterys, other than that I spent my morning building an AK47 for my brother, got pictures of the lift to when I went to see him this morning that I will post later tonight

Fair enough man, like I said, just curious. Everythings got it's place. But I'd spend the next 10 years building my junk if I put the time into the finish work that you are. I don't get paid enough on mine:laughing:

Like I said, shit looks good and you got some skills. Carry on:flipoff2:

For the record and a comparison though, I spent about an hour on my cover, and the finish work you put into yours, would have smashed and gound off already(mine's on another truck now)

I do admit it takes me weeks sometimes to build certain parts, I always have something in my back pack to do at work during breaks and such, between 2 jobs a wife and 2 kids its hard to find time sometimes

I like your build though and you are light years ahead of me, I plan on this truck being with us forever so I have a little time to work on it, You're a lot like my buddy sean he built a sandrail in a matter of months, it is rough and looks rough but hey he has a sandrail and he's happy, I just have more patience and I'm more of a planner, I will design my parts on graph paper-order all of the hard parts-put whatever I can together and then jump in and get er done thus the reason that my rear end is still apart the pinion assembly and carrier are rebuilt ready to go in but the axle is missing the anti wrap bracket, after I weeld that on then I will dousche the housing, put it together and then paint it

I did like your twin trannys and I thinking that might be the way to go, I have a 2wd SM465, A 4wd 10 spline/NP205 and a 4wd 28 spline I think/NP241 to play with

The only thing I got done today was smashing a running board while wheeling the shit out of the BB 2wd in the field near my house, oh and I tore the blaster apart to figure out why it had kidney stone, the guy I bought it from did etching and engraving on sand stone and glass and such, well I found a handful of rocks on the bottom fittings of the pressure pot, dick head I thought, o'well I'll rebuild it and make it better, also rebuilt a few military surplus water seperators for the blaster and air compressor

Hope fully I'm going to pull the tan burban off the road for a few weeks here pretty soon, I wanna get the rear suspension redone and the axle moved 6" back and then start working on boxing the frame in and building the rear bumper.

Don't get the gay yellow paint on the carrier, chances are, if you are into that thing in the middle of the night for emergency repairs, a flashlight is going to be doing the illumination, not the glow in the dark paint...

But anyway, what is the deal with that giant half moon of steel welded to the top of your axle housing for?

A truss? Looks like dead weight to me.

BadMonkey
06-01-2009, 09:02 PM
It's Flourescent yellow and is bright under my LED mag lite, its a truss and mounting point for track bars and anti wrap bars, eh I like it whats yours look like? I've seen the buy it build it yourself lame tubing ones floating around and some pretty sketchy other ones, surprise me, whatcha got? Why is your shit supreme? I wanna see a better way, mines still not done yet and liable to change.

Anywhoo I got the lift torn down this morning and into the back of the new BB Burb, it squatted like fat kid after wedding cake and yet still hauled ass when needed, Best guess was maybe 1500lbs of steel with all of the arms and attachments, those arms are effing heavy

There was acutally more in it before these pics were taken

Yup, all bought and built....:shaking:

Edit: and before you go out of your way to point out that I don't have an axle truss, you would be correct. (ahead of time)

Don't need one. On a 14 bolt? for what that burban is going to be seeing for duty?

BadMonkey
06-02-2009, 06:27 PM
Ahh but what you don't know is that this will be pulling around a 30+ ft. gooseneck toy hauler, between the airbags, shaved housing and 1000 or so pounds mounted right above the axle I figured it couldn't hurt, it wouldn't hurt yours either but to each there own.

In the past with the SF 9.5 I have burned the seals and gear oil out of that axle on more than one occasion the last time I was about 70 miles from home picking up a single pallet of bricks for the yard or so I thought, that alone overloaded the truck, then they shoved another one in behind it, needless to say the headlights where pointing to the sky and I had no other way so I drove it home stopping a few times to let the axle simmer down, when I tore the axle apart the stench of gear oil was horrendus the seals were melted and all the bearings where garbage. 100 or so dollars later and we were back in business, stupid C- clips have failed twice with no load, just wheeling:shaking:.

So long story short I'm not taking any chances this time around

GMCTruxrule

Been wheelin alot latey, anyway I did get the lift up and running and damn its nice not having to crawl around anymore, picks the burby's up with ease, its a 9000lb. forward 2 post lift

Been breakin alot of parts lately too, the rear end suffered a spider gear which led me to weld the whole damn thing up, its the SF 9.5 14 bolt
The front suffered a U-joint last saturday and a long inner shaft the next morning, The spicer U-joint held more than the shaft did, the cheap u-joint failed instead of the shaft, I don't know whats more desirable to have break as the weak link, the d44 is pretty lame under a fullsize and its getting old tearing it apart, D60 I hope soon but its hard to spend a grand when the economy is in the shits. I will have more wheelin pics this weekend we're supposed to be going camping friday or saturday night, heres some for now.

Went out to delle in search of a d60 tonight didn't find any but anyway took some pics while wheeling around behind the gas station out there, I was trying to sky a wheel and finally found a berm big enough to get little air under the tires
2wd welded definetly opens up more possibilitys when wheeling
