I need to order some 5.38 ring and pinions for a set of axles that I have. They're out of a 1975 3/4ton Chevy Truck (14B/D44). I was told that I would need to know the gear ratio of the axles before I could order the new R&P. I pulled the cover on the 14B, and found out I have 4.10 - So I will need thick cut gears for the rear.

As far as the front, I wasn't sure how to figure out what I needed. So I went to the website - "Accu Auto Parts" - Which allows your to type in the Year, make, and model to find out what it has, even though I already knew it already had a front Dana 44.

So basically my two questions are:

It says the front axle is a "Standard Dana 44 - 30 spline", Is this correct?

Also, 5.38 "Motive Gears" are $122, 5.38 "Yukon Gears" are $233. Is there a big difference is quality between the two? Is it worth the $111 to go with the Yukons?

Thanks for your help guys! I just want to figure this out before I make a stupid - And expensive - Mistake! :)

Yes, should be standard dana 44 30 spline differential.

Dunno on the gear quality.

I believe that Randys Ring and Pinion all sell Yukon for aftermarket gears.

I run that brand, and haven't had any problems.

Some things you can afford to be a cheapskate on. Gears would be one thing I would spend more.

as for gear quality, im not sure, but i would look at it this way. its like buying craftsman and snap on tools, both good tools, both lifetime warranty, but your snap ons will last 4x as long before they break.

ya get what ya pay for, R&P isnt somethin id want breakin 5 miles back in the woods and trails. just my .$02
