NotQuiteSane 09-06-2002, 07:41 PM I just got off the phone with Sean (Bindernut). he didn't go into details, but he was in a freinds scout, and it rolled over. he said he was in the hospital for 9 days, and declared dead 3 times.
No roll bar, they were on their way to measure for one.

from what he told me, the missing shocks on Corns scout didn't help either.

OS,
He said he was "none the worse for wear"
I know O2 to his brain was cut off for about 6 minutes, but he sounded fine on the phone.
He may end up disabled like me, but I don't think he'll let that stop him.

JoshC 11-08-2002, 07:11 PM That is really good to hear NQS. I had Binderfan2000 in my rig on the way up for our last Con run and he was saying he hadn't heard a word from Sean.

Good 2 here he's doing alright!, that reminds me I should take that extra roll bar I got & put in in my new '72, should probably invest in some seatbelt too!! It's just a stocker right now, little tires/highway gears/ but gets 14mpg!!
I'll eventually do a SOA, by the time I get to this one I might even be brave enough to do a coil-over or 4-link?????
Binderfan2002 11-11-2002, 01:45 PM I am glad to here he is ok.
tsm1mt 11-11-2002, 02:47 PM Wow.. I hadn't looked at this thread until it came up to the top today.
I figured it was Joe trying to get ahold of Sean or something.. no idea anyone was involved in an accident, or pronounced dead.
Yikes.
I'll reiterate that "It's the road roll-overs that always hurt worse".. and why when everyone claims, "It's just for the trail, this water pipe is fine.. I'm only going to tip it over.. no multiple rolls or anything.."
Seems to me, unless you're a TinBender :bender: you're far more likely to roll on the street than on the trail.. and at a higher rate of speed.
Guess I should replace those dented shocks and such.. I'm always cautious on my way to a run, because of that.. it does stop halfway well with the 36s still.. just handles poorly all around these days. :D
uglyscout 11-11-2002, 04:49 PM I have seen and heard about enough Scouts rolling on the road to get smart! I hope everyone comes out of this one OK in the long run..
I just added a few lateral supports to my roll cage the other day. One at the dash and one right behind the seats at shoulder level. I didn't real add them for trail saftey - but street saftey. The stock cage was probaly fine for a slow speed roll but I could just see it collapsing sideways in a high speed roll.
Next we tie the cage to the frame and the seats to the cage!
NotQuiteSane 01-22-2003, 11:40 PM Called Sean the other day to see if he'd forgotten how to use a computer. he says he'll be back.
he's doing well, working for a local engineering firm, and looking for an apartment

GRMhick 01-23-2003, 01:04 AM God Was looking out for him. Happy to hear he is Ok.
Similar thing happened to me a few years back, pulling a trailer behind a cj5, with no cage, rollbar, nothing. Trailer came around on me going down a hill and the jeep went sideways. I still thank god there was a brick wall there, or else i dont think I woudl have walked away. To this day i am still fearful of rollovers.

Binderfan2002 04-25-2003, 10:28 PM Talking to Sean now. This is a BTT for him to read and post. :D

Bindernut 04-25-2003, 11:51 PM Hey everybody, I'm back. :D Just got off the phone with Steve (Binderfan2002), he said he'd bring this thread up top for me to look over, which he did. I really appreciate the genuine concern for my well being that you all expressed when this thread was originally posted. We all have a hell of a good time thrashing on each other here, but this shows that we're still real people who give a damn about what happens to each other. I appreciate that, guys (and gals), thanks!
It is my pleasure to announce that I have made a full recovery from my rollover accident of last August. God really got my back on this one. If you know all the details (as I do), you know I should be dead, or at very best severely retarded and physically handicapped. I was pronounced dead 3 different times, didn't breathe for nearly ten minutes, was crushed underneath a Scout II, and was in a coma for 3 days with a coma rating equal to dead. I "shouldn't" even be here today. Two other guys in serious car accidents were in the hospital that same time as I was. One is still recovering, and suffers from physical and mental problems even still. The other one is dead. However, I retain my full mental and physical capabilities I always had previously! I have, however, taken the year off from grad school, and am living and working back up in Mt. Shasta, Ca, which is my hometown. I work as a design engineer at a civil/structural engineering firm. I took about 6 months off to recover -- for a long time my memory was very poor and my cognitive skills were sub-par, but I no longer struggle with any of that anymore. I retain my knowledge in engineering and mechanics, and all my memories of the past -- not too bad for somebody whose heart stopped 3 different times and who didn't have oxygen to his brain for nearly ten minutes, huh? Top that! :flipoff2: No, seriously though, I hope that nobody else here ever has to go through what I went through. It was hell on my family and friends to have to see my in the condition I was in. My friend Corn (short for Cornelius) was driving, but he wasn't doing anything foolish or unreasonable. We're still good friends. He doesn't post on POR, btw, for those of you that were curious about that. He was really tore up after the accident, felt really guilty because he wasn't hurt at all in the rollover (which allowed him to be instrumental in saving my life, by the way!) Anyway, we've got his Scout going well again since then. I gave him a new windshield frame and wing windows for the doors, and sold him some of my 200' stash of 2"x.125" HREW, so he now has a full roll cage built and installed, and is ready for some more action.
Tom, what you were saying about on-road rollovers being the worst is really true. We were just cutting across a dirt road (suitable for a Cadillac) headed out to my parents place to do some measurements for the cage we were to build. We didn't make it, unfortunately. I've never been hurt like that in a trail rollover...
Anyway, I'm back around, and I'll be checking in here more regularly again. It was nice to catch up with you on the phone this evening, Steve. Thanks for posting the earlier info about the accident in the first place, Joe (NQS). And for you guys from the east bay from the bbq, like joshc, mark, bob (OS), and others, I look forward to the next time we can get together and have some fun on the rocks.
:)
Regards,
Sean Shepard

Old Scout 04-26-2003, 08:06 AM If your still into Scouts, your still sick! like the rest of us
:flipoff2:
Bindernut 04-26-2003, 12:50 PM Yeah, I'm still crazy about Scouts. Everybody else thinks I'm nuts too, so that's alright. I just don't see why getting in one little (okay, not-so-little) accident should cause me to carry new fears around. That's not how I operate. I've an increased level of respect for the possibilities of danger that I didn't have previously, but I'm not scared to ride around in cars now or some fool thing!
Yup, I'm starting my frameoff on the '79 SII, and just narrowed a 60 for the rear of my '73. My brother built himself a nice new full cage in his '69 800A to replace the old rollbar he'd built. It turned out really nice. I see my elite membership recently expired, I guess I'll have to throw a few chips in again so I can post pics.

JoshC 04-26-2003, 01:13 PM Very happy to hear that you are back to 100%. That's just amazing! :)
Chad H 04-26-2003, 03:01 PM Wow , I cant imagine how different might look at things now, being that you were basically dead. I would think that it makes you a stronger person, even though Im sure you , I, or anyone would WANT to go through what you did. Glad you OK Man......
jdjanda 04-26-2003, 05:38 PM Good news, glad to see your back in the saddle and fully recovered.
