: 1st weld.
rusted 09-06-2002, 09:49 PM Ok, it's a slow Friday night, so I thought I would post my first attempt. Someone did this a while back, couldn't search it up.
This is 1/8" galvanized plate, lapped. .030 flux-core wire feed.
Barely tech, but I think I'd get flamed off the chit-chat board with this.
Laugh away:flipoff2:
*edit* Oh, guess I'll post the fawking PICTURE!

ItsaCJ6 09-06-2002, 09:55 PM ............. now for second lesson don't weld on galvanized unless you would enjoy a shortened life span and the lack prosperity of good health..
rusted 09-06-2002, 10:00 PM You know, I was wondering about that when all that smoke started billowing up! I won't do it again.
Thanks for the tip!
BadDog 09-06-2002, 10:28 PM I was just about to post the same warning then realized it was already done. Man, that shtuff is bad news...
Fortunatley you can grind off the coating
rusted 09-06-2002, 10:32 PM Picked this up:
Fume
When welding galvanized steel white fumes of zinc oxide are produced. Inhalation of these fumes may cause physiological problems which, although short term, are easily avoided. Adequate ventilation combined with proper fume extraction completely eliminate exposure to welding fumes.

MattS 09-06-2002, 10:38 PM Try and weld on some regular steel and then post a pic! Why not join 2 pieces of scrap? Then everyone can tell you what you did wrong!! LOL That one looks like bird shit but who knows if it was you or the galvanized plate puking toxic fumes. :flipoff2:

"Spatter
Vapour streaming from the zinc coating causes excessive spatter to be produced when welding galvanized steel. "
DOH! Couldn't see a damned thing. Couldn't get my speed right, cause it spit no matter what the speed. And, I had the heat WAYY higher than what the book said for that thickness, another characteristic of welding galvanized.
So much for grabbing the first thing off the pile!
Welde? I PIPE lotsa Galvinizeed n o pROBLEMS. I cant' seefor the smoKe...
fock the what?:goofball:
joefear7 09-07-2002, 12:30 AM EH! Just drink lots of milk it makes the sickness from breathing the galvanized go away. Who cares if you die of volital fumes or get cancer from it. as long as your welds look good thats all that should matter. So just grind the galvanized off and weld away.

.030 flux-core wire feed.

Flux core will aways smoke and spatter, its just a side effect of what it does. Still stay away from the fumes if you can, fresh air is a good thing. Have fun gluing stuff together, just keep practicing.
MR4WD 09-07-2002, 12:29 PM Before I decided to jump ship and become a power lineman, I was a 3rd year welder; I welded copious amounts of galvanized steel. No, it's not good for you. Yes, it burns your nose. Yes, it's a carcinogen. Inhaling smoke in general should never be deemed a good idea by anybody. Wear a filter when you're welding this stuff if you HAVE to stick your melon over the puddle, but it won't kill ya right off the bat. The welds look pretty good actually for the first time around. As far as grinding the coating off to get a cleaner surface to weld to, that's about the same as inhaling it while welding, but you'll get less porosity and carbon embrittlement.
NE-RokToy 09-07-2002, 04:11 PM looks really good for a first weld, obviously need practice holding it steady to get a straight uniform weld but that will come with time, keep practicing and read to learn how to get the settings right.
weldpro 09-07-2002, 07:12 PM [i] carbon embrittlement. [/B]
from zinc?-please explain!
roktoy- not bad for first time-really. Increase your travel speed abit(make sure your AHEAD of the puddle.

rusted 09-07-2002, 10:01 PM Thanks for the comments. I had the wire speed WAY low, I just thought I was moving too fast.
This takes some talent. You gotta move right along or it gets too hot and the puddle acts funny. Stay ahead of it like weldpro said.
Thanks again. I'll burn up a roll before I get to the fun stuff :)
