: tubular fender ??

I am planning on making some front fenders with1.75'' tubing in a month or so. For those of you who have made them before, what center line radius die did you use to do the bending? I looked at my options for the jd2 model 3 bender I have and they are 5.5'',6.5'',and7.5''. Any suggestions? I am thinking the 6.5'' may be the best option since it also allows me to make cages without the bends being too tight.

Rusty, I would go with the 6.5 for over all use. I am planning on building the same, however I plan on using 1.5" .120 and .095 tube with 5.5 radius. This will be fenders and the front bezel. My plan is to loose all the front sheet metal, but the hood and head light trim bezel. (for better cooling and tire clearance.)

6.5" R 1.5" tubing. I can shoot some pics if someone else wants to put them up...

Hey TLCObsession, since I have never done the tube fenders, is the 1.5'' tubing just for cosmetics, or will I run into problems with clearances if I use 1.75'' tubing?

Check out this THREAD (http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13968) for pics and details of Metalmender's tube fenders. Rich did a great job, IMHO.

Thanks Nolen!

These are the semi-finished fenders. No paint yet because I wanted a little bit of rust to get the mill scale off and to make sure I liked the way they worked. So far I really like them.

The stubs on the front are for the front grill guard to slip into. The fenders are bolted to stubs welded to the frame and the old inner fender brace and are completely removable.

I have slid sideways into a tree, and they didn't move.

This was my first bender project - I do not reccomend multi plane bends as a first project!:flipoff2:

Gotta like them "waste mgmt." style fender! Don't have to worry about replacing the fenders ever again.. Mine has the diamond plate on top of the fenders.

Thanks for the pics. I have seen the sheetmetal welded and bolted to the tubing in different pics. Is there really any way to damage the sheetmetal without boogering up the tubing? I am thinking that stitch welding the plate would be a little easier than making tabs to bolt the sheetmetal to. Or is there something else I am not seeing here?

I stitch welded mine. Weld, clamp, weld, clamp etc to get the metal to follow the lines. When it was in place & tight, I just filled it in and welded it up.

Rusty, I really want to see what you come up with.

Can you do a lower profile fender that goes to the hood too?

I think it would be really cool to add the downward bend at the front like a stock fender. I know it would be a bunch of extra work for no reason other than looks.;)

Hey Mace...you will see what he comes up with because they are for Kate :D

As for the downward bend and up to the hood....that's what we have in mind.

COOL!!!!!!!

See, if this works you would have to stop making fun of me for not really having any bumpstops and I would have to stop making fun of you for having those 11" bumpstops!!

I am going with the downward bend on my tube fenders as well. I am also planning on making them kind of stubby (sticking out half the size of stock) and almost flush to the hood. (No fender bonnets) The front bend will be there, and then tie into the front bezel. I am going to try to eliminate the sheet metal front clip that holds the lights. I will just tube in that area and build mounts for the decorative bezel that goes around the head lights. (An attempt to keep it cruiser looking.) Off that front tube I will add the nose guard kicking back kind of like a small bug deflector. If it looks like chit, I will just put the front sheet metal back on. (Keeping the tube fenders of course!)

Jim, I like you fenders that sure would have been one heck of a first bender project! Sorry but I also got’ta give you some junk for NO PAINT! Bellingham is not to far away from Portland. I got a free can of primer for ya. :flipoff2: ;)

OK all you guys:flipoff2: ;) :flipoff2: :flipoff2:

No one read my post?

If you let the mill scale (on the plate - not the tube) rust, you can easily blast it. The commercial guy who does my blastic charges DOUBLE if there is mill scale.

You guys may also have noticed: my front vlip is red - the rest is a really nice green. I need to pull the entire clip off and sand or blast it and then paint.

I have a couple of quarts of DP in the garage along with enough paint to repaint the entire 40 (maybe twice..)

If I sound defensive I really am not - but I have limited time to either - wrench - paint - bend tube - or wheel... I wheel.

Guess I better paint before it gets too cold....
