B.A.R.K 05-28-2009, 07:42 AM Is this the same D44 with the aluminum center section?
geberhard 05-28-2009, 10:38 AM DO NOT do it. All ZJ and WJ 44's plain suck. go witha XJ 44 or an 8.8 explorer to be on teh safe side. The center alum section is prone to fialure, you will have limited lcoker\gearing availability, and it will fail.

yes.
I'm buying it from a friend, with gears, detroit locker and disc brakes for $800.
what do you think?
I saw this diffrential before on a TJ and i was good
geberhard 05-28-2009, 01:50 PM Well if you ask, then get advised not to do it and still do it, it is still your cal. good luck :nuke:
By the way, is it already setup for a TJ or will you have to get the brackets and mounts still?

waste of money IMHO
xo_jeep 05-28-2009, 02:12 PM X10 on the NO!
adam1999wj 05-28-2009, 02:26 PM they arnt as bad everyone say they are , the pinion is a hair smaller that a d60, the shafts are a decent size, an it has disk brakes, they are pretty tough with a simple truss and some sorta skid under the chunk. but for 800 bux i i could easily find something abit better , less than 500 would be a decent deal

thanks, yes i'm working in the price. Oh it has cromolly axcels too.
I think because the tj doesn't have a v8 and the weight is lighter, it will be a no problem the aluminum housing.
Mrfreeze5 05-28-2009, 02:43 PM The coil buckets are different on the ZJ, you will probably have to swap them out.
jrw7072009 05-28-2009, 02:51 PM You could find a used 8.8 from a explorer with discs and do a super 88 kit and locker and you will have a very nice setup for around $1000 bucks and it would be way better and stronger then the D44 your looking at buying. I agree, I say no go on the ZJ WJ D44s there not the best axle.

This is true and I think that the only locker available for them is the aussie, correct me if Im am wrong.
fynearte 05-28-2009, 03:34 PM for that kinda dough go d60:flipoff2:
geberhard 05-28-2009, 04:47 PM Aluminum bearing cap will brake, then breakj your gear teeh, pinion and locker.
Not sur eif the pic will show up, on WJ D44 alum center section, youcan see the bearing cap on the left brok in half.

So are the upper control arm mounts and track bar mount.
WJ's are tri linked and all the brakets are different.
There were a few ZJ's with cast rear 44's and manuals in the US. Some South american ZJ's had 44 fronts. Very hard to find these but if you do kudos to you.
The standard D44a is not worth the money. If you have one in a grand run it till it breaks then swap it. Thats what I did with my last Grand. Do not put money in to them (swaped to a ford 9 personaly).
The can hold power (also come in some vetts and vipers in IFS form) but have pinion bearing problems and do not hold up to the abuse of rocks.
60Grand 05-28-2009, 11:19 PM For $800 you could have a D60, or fairly built 9"..
I have a ZJ and glad I never had to deal with the D44HD as it's called
ohiozj 05-29-2009, 05:23 AM avoid it......... epsecially for that kind of cash

from what i understand and have seen, the 8.8 is stronger than a "regular" 44 anyway
there is also less to cut off to get it to fit under the TJ. you have to scrap most of the brackets from the Grand from what everyone else is saying.
