: Split Case Doubler?

I've been gone for a while, trying to get settled into a new place and a new job, so I've been a little out of touch with the Cruiser scene for the first time in years. Did any crawler box options for the split case surface while I was gone? I didn't think Marlin was planning on making one and neither was AA...what's the scoop?

The NP203 option is the only one I'd consider, I don't want to grind my split case to put the Aussie gears in there, and besides, they're pretty unproven, I don't want to be an expensive guinea pig...

Don't know about the split case doubler but one your fellow club members and neighbor, David Perry is doing a 465/split case on his 60 right now.
Might run by and check it out.
You are in San Antonio now aren't you?

Butch, I'm in Austin!

I definitely don't want to give up the H55F in my Land Cruiser unless I absolutely have to. After all, I built this truck so I can drive long distances in it and still wheel, and I don't want to compromise that...

Ideally I'd like to keep the H55F and the split t-case, then add a crawl box; I just don't think there is anything currently available for my drivetrain.

Forgot you had the 5 spd......
Just shelve the idea until you get a 40
BTW remember the FJ45 at the farm......I worked a deal on it, now I got to decide what route to go with it.............

Call me stupid, but I thought that the adaptors Jerry Nichols cooked up would work with your drivetrain. H55F/H42 to NP203 to split case?

nothing wrong with the aussie transfer case gears. Marks and rockhopper have them availiable. I have not heard of any problems with them at all.

People are running them behind 454ci chevs and 44 boggers and havent broken anything.

Beanz? Dr Tay? you out there?

We have had one failure in Nor Cal with the 3.1 set Dave Tay blew a small hole in his 34mm case with the Mark's gearset. The 2.8 don't require mods, but the cost to crawl ratio is out for many people (since a US model will have a 2.27:1 gear set). Sullivan also said the set was loud as a 'worn sm420' which would make a 1,500 mile trip terrible.

I agree with HC there needs to be more data not hearsay.

Yes, it was me who had my t-case messed up. But it wasn't because of the 3:1 gears. An oil slinger disintegrated and a piece was caught between the case and the large output gear. So it punched a hole from the inside.

It was my own fault of using an older (pre11/82) case with an oil slinger from the new case on the idler gear cluster. I had a brand new split case that I wanted to use, but my friend wanted the front half so he can use it for an H55f conversion (I run an NV4500.) So, I gave him the front half and I got his front half. The older front half wasn't meant to run an oil slinger and wasn't clearanced for the oil slinger. A quick few welds and grinding solved the problem though.

Yes, these gears are noisy, but even in 3rd gear on the NV4500 they're still quieter than the SM420-3 speed case they replaced.

See? THAT would be money! I got all the space in the world to run a crawler box (or two, or THREE) on this big boat, I just them to be available! :)

I gotta get off my ass and spend the $$$ for 4.88's, that should help slow this abomination down to an acceptable level, allowing me to wheel more often until the crawler box options are out there. As it stands now, it's a scary ride! :)

First off, Rick... where the heck you been? Any word on that FJ45LV right rear window regulator? Ppppplease? And some door catches as well.

On the Marks' Gears: I think if you buy them direct, they are a good bang for the buck... an easy bolt in, and you grind very very little of the case to fit them. But, if i were to do it again, i'd go 203 doubler. More gearing options, lower gearing, and a shorter driveshaft... which is a good thing in my situation. BUT, to do the 203 right, you have to cut your floor board to get the transfercase high enough. and you have to get the sweet triple stick set-up that 4X4Labs came up with (its art).

the 203 set-up whines as much as the Marks' gears... but... whatever. it ain't that bad.

FWIW, I think Mark Whatley and maybe a handful of others are selling a 203 to split case adapter. Steve Fox FoxSP@health.missouri.edu in Tornado Alley runs one in his 60, you might want to get impressions of it from him. I helped put together a Kluve V into a 4 speed. IMO nice looking well built unit, adaptable via plates to a whole bunch of different trannies and t-cases. So switch from a Toyota 4 speed to SM465 to a NV4500 and you can still keep the unit, even switch T-cases too, adapter plates on both sides. The shifters look like boat throttles which is a little cheezy. But you could fab up your own levers easily enough. IIRC there's a 2.8 or 4.0 reduction, your choice. About $2200 though.

Klune-V is not available for the split case AFAIK.

Does anyone have a picture of the three-shifter setup from 4x4Labs?

If it isn't it will be shortly. I remember it being a topic of conversation with one of their engineers / sales guys who works there. Primer Bronco Beater and a Mullet

Klune-V is not available for the split case AFAIK.

I think you're right, from their website:
*Front kit for long 19-spline output transmissions (4 & 5 speed, A440 & A442 auto) in development - inquire!

I think AA's crawler box is also "in development" for our split case wagons.

A moot point for me until I can collect a lot more bottles and cans. Hopefully, by next year I'll have the dough and someone with have the crawler box.

Of course the fall back position is the 203 doubler. Very nice set up. I had test rides in two 203 equipped FJ60s at this past Rubithon. Spoke to another who has one (Steve F.) and previously checked out the Millers. So I know that set-up is available and works well.

But, being a greedy bastard, I figure if 2:1 is good, 3 or 4:1 is mo betta. So the Klune V or AA boxes sound good to me. And now I've added the Marks crawler box to my list. If I could get one of these deeper doublers, I'd forgo trading my 4spd for a 5spd. I'd let some taller tires (37s) be my overdrive. With the 203's 2:1 I'd like to get the extra help from the 5 spd lower first gear and the overdrive would be nice while cruising up I-5 to get to rubicon.

I really need to get some gears, in the words of The Jerk, Steve Martin, "And that's ALL I need". Really.

"I'mmmmm picking out a thermos for yooooooou!!!"

Jim, go for the 5 speed, 203 doubler, with mark's gears in the case, and mark's crawler hanging off the back....

with your 4.56:1 gears, that'd give you....

4.89X2X3.05X3.05X4.56 = 414:1

Would take you a week to get to Buck Island, and all your ice cream will be melted.

(although i doubt the crawler gears will work with the crawler box).

Forgot to mention it, Steve is running the H55F with the 203 and split case. So the adapters are available for the 5 speed.

the cruiser crawler is NOT 3.05, the crawler gears are, the crawl box is actually 6:1, so it would make more than 414:1 with all that gear on board, itd take you a week to drive into your shed

and thats PHAAAAAT oooohhhh YEAH!!!

crawler and some gears and no additional $$$ on tailshafts is gunna be SWWEEEEEETTT

thatll give me more than sufficient, i will ring him again soon and remind him, that guys with split cases are after the GEAR!!

im gunna buy both the gearset and the cruiser crawler at the same time and try and get it a little cheaper
