My steering box has a ton of play in it and needs to be replaced. Anyone got one that they want to sell? Must be in great shape.

Thanks

Have you tried to adjust the play out of it? It's tricky, but if you're patient, it can be worth the time.

That said, have you also made sure that the rest of the steering is in good shape?

I took the play out of my steering box, only to find the swivel pins were corroded, fixed that only to find the rag joint is worn (I'd already replaced the bushings and tie rods), of course, then I promptly drove it off the roa dinto a snowy field and got to start over:flipoff2:

How do you adjust the play in the steering box? All other parts seems to be fine.

Loosen the locknut on the top, then, use an allen driver, tighten the bolt protruding through the locknut until resistance is felt, back off quarter-to half-turn, tighten locknut, testdrive.

Be aware that the first time, you will almost certainly get it too tight and have to go back and loosen it a little. It's better to tighten a little, test drive, repeat. You'll know when you've gone too far.

The box also needs to be perfectly centered IIRC, because the part that you are tightening is not flat.

Thanx! You're right. I've found the tighten a little, test-drive, tighten a little, test-drive has worked well for me on the few instances where I've needed to do it.

On the back of the drop-arm, there is a gap that just happens to accept a 5/16" drill bit to center the steering gearbox. OK, it's really 8 m/m.:flipoff2:
