I am building a 1979 F-350 4x4 it currently has D60 and 14bolt with discs 4.56's and lockers. I want a set of Mog axles. The truck has a C6 auto and 700HP Dyno Tested big block. I want to reduce my driveline angles and have a set of axles that will hold up. I do not know if 404's will hold. I think I need a set of 406's or larger. Any suggestions and places to find a set? I would need a pinon conversion and possibly 8 lug.

I have not read of many guys running over 500hp with 404's. I do a little bit of everything with the truck including tractor pull.

Thanks for the info.

Rexman, I'm thinking he has a 14 bolt rear and a Dana 60 front.
To xford,,,,, those MOG axles will get the other truck pullers undies in a wad!! (but only if you do good), they aren't going to know what they are looking at, and will probably not believe you.
GO FOR IT !!!!!!:D

700hp and the weight of an f350? No way would I put 404s under that truck.

The axles are complete, but have no brakes or hardware. I was told that 406 8 lug conversions will fit. Any truth to this? Will a 406 pinon conversion work? I don't want to buy something that will be a royal pain. I could probably come up with something, but don't want to do 2 years of R&D. Any ideas?

With that kind of HP I would put the later style diesel axles under the truck. You will find that your 1200 axles are VERY similiar to your 406/416 axles. Be careful in what you pay if you want the stock disc brakes as buying partial mog portals and purchasing the parts to make them whole can quite often cost more than buying complete axles. We do carry both the 404's and the later axles in varying conditions/styles.

Cheers,

When you say later axles, what other types do you mean? Do you have any of the U series or 406 axles available? Any recommendations on 8 lug conversions?

Thanks

i agree with him!!! not trying to bust you bubble man, but i would be really cautious about 404's for your application... i had a set of front and rear steer 404's, and after me researching them more AFTER i bought them, i decided to sell them and go with some u1300L's! and now i have no question they will hold up!, and def after i started taking my u1300's apart! they are big and stout!!.... that would prob be your best bet! like scott is suggesting i would also suggest.. 406's or u1300L's etc.

What are the differences between the U series and the 406 axles. I have been told they are very similar. What about some U1550 axles? I have a guy who says he can get me some. Are they too big?

the 406 are old and not as strong as the newer U series. the 406 were under the 100 something horse power gas engine and rated for about 1 1/2 tons i think. the u1300's are diesel powered and have much higher capacity (7 tons i think).

1.5 tons for 406 axles? I don't think so. The axles have a 4 ton load rating.

i figured i was off quite a bit, but it gets the general point across the 406/404's arent the best idea.

404's won't hold up, 406's should be fine. 406's and 404's are not even in the same league.

How is that Stak T-case working out ? I am thinking about buying one, for the overdrive. It would help when I hit the highway. I want to be able to drive it on the street some.

My stak has given me issues...Popping out of gear. When my case was apart they noticed the shift rails had wear spots. As if the detents were not alligning properly. Its back together and I'll be testing it out this weekend.

Other than the above issue, I love the gearing options. The case looks to be bulletproof.
