More like hydro...

Picked up the 40 thursday and drove her home. Turns freaking awsome with the p/s and hydro assist. First thing I had to do was drive in a tight little circle, and since the rear is welded now it dug a small trench:D. Also had a front lockright installed up front.
Matt Hodges (TheLakeRat) at WTOR did the work.
The only problem so far is the dang welded rear is already broken:mad:. The guy that welded it said he'd give me a week before my axles are all bent up, and I said I'd give him a week before his welds broke...took a few hours, not even off-roading:rolleyes:.
Heres a few poser pics :flipoff2:

LOOKIN GOOD. YOU MANAGED TO BREAK THE WELDS ENOUGH TO ACCTUALLY SPIN A TIRE? WHERE DID HE WELD? I CANT SEE THIS BEING POSSIBLE IF HE WELDED THE SPIDERS TOGETHER:confused:

I think it's time to find a new welder

Tire don't chirp when I turn or anything...I even did a figure-8 on the interstate by my house and no chirping tires...

I have broken 3 welded diffs in my cruiser. The last one i know was welded well (professionally) i had to put in a quick lock which i know i will break! Someone needs to make a spool for us!

I KNEW A GUY WHO REMOVED HIS SPIDERS AND WELDED HIS SIDE GEARS [STEEL] TO HIS CARRIER [CAST IRON] WITH 6010, OBVIOUSLY IT WAS DOOMED TO BREAK, AND IT DID A WEEK LATER WHEN HE WAS WHEELING IT, BUT EVEN THEN HE DIDNT MANAGE TO GET ENOUGH CARNAGE TO ALLOW A TIRE TO SPIN. IF YOU GUYS HAVE A PIC OF THE AFTERMATH OF A DIFF THAT WAS WELDED AND BROKE ENOUGH TO ALLOW SPINNAGE I WOULD DEFINATLY LIKE TO SEE IT.

awesome, i NEED hydro assist, and halfway through it

FILL that diff...they are pretty strong once welded correctly, maybe try melting lead into it also, whatever you think is enough is about half what you need

tell him you wont break an axle no matter how much he welds it.

its probly broken enough weld off to make a little bit of slip in the spiders, that wont chirp, haul it inot a corner, and stand on it (dont tip it over) just enough to peg it sideways, if it doesnt want to stand up and go sideways, then something is WRONG :D

Have a competent welder weld them like this.

YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE TO PUT EXTRA METAL INTO THE DIFF OR MELT LEAD INTO IT. IF YOU DO IT PROPERLY, IT WILL BE PLENTY STRONG. I ALSO BELIVE THAT ADDING METAL CAN CAUSE BALANCE PROBLEMS RESULTING IN VIBRATION AT SPEED OR EXCESS WEAR.

BUT THATS JUST MY OPINION

My last diff was filled in much more than that even. I'll admit i was givin it hell when i broke it but damn thats why i bought a cruiser!

Man, mixing the metals you weld too is what always breaks on Cruisers.

I would just weld the spider gears in the 8 places they meet and I would pour the coals to it and put plenty of filler in there.

i by far am not the expert but i have read alot about welded diffs on this bbs. from all that i have read and from the broken weled diffs i have personally seen, welding both gears to gears and gears to carrier is the better way. i have see diffs with just the gears welded and they broke. i have seen diffs with just the side gears welded to the diff that broke. i have seen lots of pic posted on here of people who welded it all up and they seem to have a better time. ask mike shannon how he welded his gears up in his 62 the first time. :D they didn't last. like i said i am not the athority on welded diffs. all i am adding is from all the welded diff posts i have read.

Getting back to the main thread.... Are you planning on running larger tires? Personally, I don't understand the need for hydro-assist for tires in the 35-36" range. Am I missing something here?

Well, acually...I am going to lower the cruiser now and use my p/s pump to run the hydro steer and the hyro suspension:rolleyes: :flipoff2:

After I graduate and go off to college I'll go bigger...maybe sooner when these tires wearout I'll get some 37s...
The main reason I went hydro assist is because it looks cool and everyone else is doing it:rolleyes:....
He gave me a good deal since I was doing the p/s then, and Matt had a saginaw box that was already drilled for the hydro...so either now or l8ter...

Joseph A.

almost forgot....it should help me break barfields faster so I can get some longfields:flipoff2:
