: Ok state regulations
made of dust 05-31-2009, 11:57 PM Okay, So I'm moving to Stillwater, Ok in July. I currently live In Ca and the laws here are ridculous. You cant have non stock engines with out going through a huge headache or run comp fenders without mud flaps, etc. What, if any, are the state regulations in Oklahoma? Is there anything that will stand in my way If I wanted to drive a buggy down the street or something simular?
Vince.
jayz8886 06-01-2009, 12:42 AM Pretty open here on laws. I know we have a height law thinking 52" to lowest headlights. Then maybe a fender law but I have never been hassled about big tires being uncovered. As for engine mods its kinda anything goes as they did away with vehicle inspection stickers a few years back. Overall its a great place to be.
HalfFastFord 06-01-2009, 05:33 AM I was amazed when I moved here. You go to a privately owned tag agency, pay the chick behind the counter for your tags, she comes out and verifies the VIN. Viola! You've got tags. No inspection. Hell, I've seen vehicles lacking a lot of parts still driving down the road.
Jay, that headlight law is a federal one, not an Okie law. It would more correctly read 54" to the center of the headlights and 72" to the center of the tailights.
Bottom line, don't worry about being hassled here. I've seen some really unsafe shit on the road here and the cops let it ride.

In Clayton they are very off road friendly. Quite a few people stay at the A&A on the main drag thru town and drive their rigs (everything from beat down junkers to comp rigs) to and from Green Acres.
Obey basic traffic laws and you wont be hassled....
Hoodlum 06-01-2009, 08:44 AM Very lax here. I have driven for weeks without a bed.....just zip tied the tail lights to the frame. No probs! It's farm country.
Just don't ever plan driving it to Missouri. Their laws and officers I have had encounters with suck!
made of dust 06-01-2009, 08:59 AM sweet. I cant wait to get there. thanks for all the info
LockedLJ 06-04-2009, 12:07 PM sweet. I cant wait to get there.
seriously? I've been to CA on biz a few times, but if you are looking forward to OK then CA must really suck :D
made of dust 06-07-2009, 03:50 PM You know, everyone would think Ca is the place to be, but if you dont have a career here and are just starting out like me (Im 20 with a wife and son), then your going to have a tough time. At least in Stillwater, I have some friends and family that can give me a chance at a good start. Ten years ago Ca was nice, but with the economy the way it is, its just hard here.
OKMudn 06-10-2009, 04:34 PM After having spent several years in stillwater while attending OSU let me warn you that the stillwater cops can be hard asses about fenders, mud flaps, and head and tail light heights. Best bet is not to be out driving at night in the buggy. Daytime I'd say you can get away with it if u are careful and drive with some sense.
made of dust 06-16-2009, 01:41 PM So they do require mud flaps. Thats what I was getting at earlier in the post? Whats required and what do you get away with? BLinkers a problem?

I've never been hassled in my Jeep. I know several other people that don't get hassled in their off road rigs. I'd bet that as long as you're acting normal the cops won't mess with you at all. Hell, My Jeep doesn't even have a windshield, much less mudflaps or fender flares.
mrtoddb 06-17-2009, 09:51 AM I run my full hydro'd, full width 60's YJ all around Broken Arrow, and I never get a second look. I also avoid the highway, just not safe, but locals don't seem to care for the most part and I would imagine you're good as long as you try to act right.
Bubba Ray Boudreaux 06-17-2009, 02:44 PM I believe it's 52" for the headlights. As for tires, they cannot stick out past the wheelwells. Windshield, proper lighting (don't run any other lights than the headlights though, some of us will tag you for fog lights); but I really don't see you having much of a problem in most areas of the state unless you act like an ass.
Oh, there's one kicker here that you might have to watch out for. The modified exhaust law, depending on who you run into and how you act might take great offense to it. Basically the state law says you cannot modify the exhaust in such a way that it's louder than stock. According that, my K-5 has illegal exhaust even though it has muffler, cat and all of that noise.
Really, don't act like an ass and I don't know how the major yuppie areas are, but you should be good. If you have anymore questions, feel free to drop me a line. You can find the statutes on line, but they were written by a retard and I usually have a statute book handy near a computer.

really????
HalfFastFord 06-17-2009, 11:36 PM We've been told by OHP, pretty much, keep it in your lane and don't drive like an ass and you'll have no problems.
Bubba Ray Boudreaux 06-18-2009, 01:53 PM really????
Yup, unless they changed it recently. It's a good law for all the inbred racist cops to use...........
Custom Splice 06-22-2009, 09:06 AM You will love Stillwater.
I just moved from there, just about to sell our house actually.
I really miss good old Calm H2O
70chevybob 06-24-2009, 06:37 PM Here are a few of the specific state laws that oklahoma has in refrence to the questions that Made Of Dust asked. If a cop wanted to they could make a mockery of laws. check out the equipment of vehicle law chapter 12 or web site.http://www.oscn.net/applications/oscn/Index.asp?ftdb=STOKST47&level=1

as far as vehicles laws. i got busted by nsu police once for cracked windshield (still cracked 2 years later) and no license plate light.
had a friend get busted for no exhuast, just a fix it ticket.
my exhaust is only about a foot or two from the Y pipe. that includes a 16 inch glass pack. never had exhuast issues.
Once a year, cherokee nation holiday, out here in tahlequah from 6pm to midnite. You can run openheaders any vehicle you want to on downey. i had a deputy bleach my tires.
If it gets to crazy theyll shut you down on that day, but burnouts and what not...goes..
stevenpetry 07-13-2009, 12:04 PM I just moved from SW OK, just north of Lawton, as long as your rig not crazy big and you don't drive like an ass, the cops stay away. OKC, Stillwater, Tulsa,....the cops there aren't as laid back as they are in the smaller towns, but they're still not that bad. I've had friends get fix it tickets for stuff like mud flaps and mirrors, but that's usually because they were being an idiot. 90% of the time you can talk yourself out of it. Now the smaller towns will get you for sound and exhaust violations. Got a lot tickets for those two. Oh, and just because the state did away with vehicle inspections, doesn't mean you don't have to keep up the standards. An officer can do on site inspection and impound your ride if something is a miss. It has happened, but like I said before, don't be an ass be cool about it, and you'll most likely go free. Head lights, tail lights and blinkers is about all you need.
Jam Master Jay 07-14-2009, 06:08 PM I've never known anyone to get a ticket for a 4x4 specific issue here. I have seen them for cracked windshields, non-functioning lights, improper towing, etc. Never heard of them for mud flaps, bumper height, fender flares or any of that stuff.
