: Jagerbomb 85 chevy
WHITE RHINO 06-01-2009, 02:13 PM So my buddy dropped off his truck and told me to build an exo on his chevy. everything on the truck was beyond thrashed so decided to boat side it first/ after i did those i chopped the top off and caged it (1.75 .120 wall dom) and cut most of the floor boards out because they were dented and cracked. The body mounts had pushed through the floor also. So the plan is to make this into a 5 seater, 3 up front and two in the back. They will all be racing seats with 5-point harnesses. The bench is temporary for the rubicon trip on thursday. I also repair quite a few cracks in the chevy frame :shaking:. So here is my take on building a chevy in a week and a half.
current specs:
85 Chevy pickup
90 tbi 5.7
stock trans/t-case (yes i know)
Rear 14bolt with discs, 5.13s, detroit
Front HighPinion Ford 60 with Reid knuckles, high steer, Chromoshafts, yukon joints, OX locker, 35spline warn hubs
Front suspension is a 3 link with 1.25 heims and a panhard ( kind of a super ghetto hi-tech redneck build and will be redone) with 2.5 King coilovers that are mounted completely wrong.
to come:
-Complete re-designed front suspension (3 link with panhard and same kings)
-cut the front of the frame off when we do full hydro all tubed out and tied into the sliders/frame/cage.
-Full hydro
-anti wrap in the rear and longer shackles
-sheetmetal work in "cab" and in the back
- rear tube work and seat mounts
-20 gallon fuel cell
-tool box and spare tire mount.

spidr 06-01-2009, 02:35 PM Cage looks sweet.
I was gonna ask what's up with the front coilovers, but I'm guessing that's part of your redo?
irishraptor87 06-01-2009, 03:10 PM how do you have a ford 60 with stock chevy drivetrain? you mean like a stock ford drivetrain? or is the drivetrain from a ifs chevy?
also, why is it jagerbomb? your friend a guido?
WHITE RHINO 06-01-2009, 04:55 PM its ifs truck stock drivetrain out of a 90ish truck. The guy is all about Jager and partyin so i just dubbed it that cuz i couldnt think of anything else. Probably be all orange and black when its done, just like his 06 superduty
WHITE RHINO 06-01-2009, 04:58 PM yeah the coilover mounts will be done after the trip i figured a cage is first in line. Ill probably lower is 4 inches or so too. this thing needs sm465 203/205 and 47's in my opinion haha and there will be door bars and more b hoop support later
Another thing is the boat sides are 40ish inches off the ground so it have crazy side clearance. Makes my ranger look slammed

makes sense now
WHITE RHINO 06-01-2009, 10:12 PM he picked it up and was stoked and i ended up throwing a 2 chamber flow on it to make it sound better haha
WHITE RHINO 06-10-2009, 06:56 PM went to the con and he had no issues

trollporter 06-12-2009, 09:02 AM Very :grinpimp:! What is the wheelbase on this thing? I assume those are 42's.
looks like that 14 bolt pig is draggin in the last pic, maybe its just the angle tho. You guys should give that thing a shavin!
WHITE RHINO 06-12-2009, 02:59 PM yeah its just the beggining he is still saving some cash to do the rest. 1st stage was safety, even though he doesnt want to get rid of the Bench seat, he got 5 point harnesses and only hit his sliders twice. I think we are going to redo the back half next, new leafs and inboard them. Anyone have any advice on what springs to use on this truck in the rear? Im thinking 3/4 63's even though i broke one at the con hahaha. The 14 is probably fine how it is, its got disks and shit already, maybe ill shave it later. Oh and yes they are 42s
WHITE RHINO 07-06-2009, 06:38 PM .....round 2 starts this week
chevyforlife502 07-06-2009, 08:07 PM Did look pretty rough before but shes truning around nice job so far
virgilwalker1 07-07-2009, 09:17 AM gotta do something with that hood too. one of the best mods i have ever done to mine. make it like your ford in the OP.
Blackdog76 07-07-2009, 10:41 PM Don't really see the point in keeping the full width hood and radiator support since all it's doing at this point is blocking vision. I hate going up and over the top of hills and seeing nothing but big fat chevy hood. I like the work so far. If your still going to meet up with me on the way to the rock races in Sac I'd love to talk about some work to my K5.
http://i690.photobucket.com/albums/vv267/blackdog2003/stufftosell009.jpg?t=1247031601
WHITE RHINO 07-19-2009, 10:55 AM the only reason its still on there is he got a little drunk and started cutting sheetmetal which took out any support the radiator would have. The hood is way more fucked up now, but he doesnt have the money yet to re do the front coilovermounts and tube out the front. i ran some ghetto temporary tubes from the shock hoops to the radiator support which should stiffin it up. Blackdog yeah let me know anytime if you need some tube bent or whatever ill give you a good deal.
as i said this truck is a work in progress, its a slow process to remove the jankyness and nagger riggin. I re did the belly skid with some bent tube and plating
slytowncrawler 07-19-2009, 09:38 PM im new to coilovers so i know little in the way of mounting them right or wrong. i like this build and look forward to seeing how you redo the coils.
so post lots of pics :grinpimp:
WHITE RHINO 07-30-2009, 12:22 AM both shock hoops ripped off on fordyce along with some other issues so look forward to more to come. Heres the new belly
definitely going to be more to come after the Fordyce trip

WHITE RHINO 08-22-2009, 11:55 AM i think he's going to drop off the front axle to get a truss, all new brackets, and full hydro set up
WHITE RHINO 01-29-2010, 02:35 PM phase 3 begins on the fullsize chevy
Step 1 Finish truss/ mount HOWE double ended ram
Step 2 Cut frame at firewall and box existing frame
Step 3 all tube front clip motor mounts etc.
Step 4 Re-do Front suspension and lower the front end

pennsylvaniaboy 02-03-2010, 03:26 PM yeh updates!!!
WHITE RHINO 02-03-2010, 03:30 PM yep should have the front of the rig done within a month and running HOPEFULLY! He's building a wiring system for it with waterproof relays/fuse box etc
blazerboy85 02-04-2010, 02:21 AM you guys got another trip deadline?
WHITE RHINO 02-04-2010, 08:47 AM Not really. My rig is pretty fucked up
blazerboy85 02-04-2010, 07:16 PM well fix that shit
WHITE RHINO 02-04-2010, 10:42 PM hahah find me tires for cheap
blazerboy85 02-04-2010, 10:59 PM hahah find me tires for cheap
haha im about to be in the same boat here pretty soon. what size? ill look and ask around
WHITE RHINO 02-05-2010, 06:18 PM 42's or 44's for 16.5 rim
so got some stuff today, got most of the truss done, and tomorrow im going to mount the ram. Gotta cut out a piece of 1/4 plate and take it to my buddies house to put it on his mill to make sure i get all 8 holes in the right place

Ten_Bucks 02-08-2010, 11:26 AM White Rhino, you definitely have awesome fabrication skills. Good job on the build and on your Ranger too.
Scott
WHITE RHINO 02-08-2010, 12:29 PM thanks man im getting better as i go still need some tools to take it to the next level (plasma and drill press at least hahah)
WHITE RHINO 02-10-2010, 04:23 PM and yes to cover/carrier come out
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj132/Section8krawlers/cover.jpg
Blackdog76 02-10-2010, 11:29 PM what kind of mig are you using? Amps and Gas? Those beads look nice.
WHITE RHINO 02-11-2010, 01:31 AM Millermatic 250 with.035 wire. I'll have to get back to you on settings. I'm constantly changin them for different thickness materials
caliboy63 02-11-2010, 09:21 AM i hate the millermatic's, not that it's a bad welder, but i am ALWAYS dialing it in, i am never happy with my settings. i have a power mig not with the abcdefg settings and its much easier to dial in (basically the same welders)
caliboy63 02-11-2010, 09:22 AM where in the south bay are you? i'm in the north bay (well north of frisco a bit)
WHITE RHINO 02-11-2010, 10:34 AM I'm in Morgan hill just below San Jose. I kinda like te adjustability because I can fine tune it to get a good looking weld with good penetration.
WHITE RHINO 02-19-2010, 05:49 PM ive been slaving away got the door bars done and axle somewhat ready to go. I gusseted the inner Cs too.

Got the rebuild kit ordered up for the King's today from the guys down at offroad engineering. I should have them put back together sometime next week. No rain forecast over the weekend, you gonna get started on the tube work?

We will see, this is the most structural part of the truck. think about it as the foundation of the truck so I'm taking my time to make sure it is right
Skoll 03-11-2010, 12:55 PM Sounds like a smartass engineer at work.
I did buy that bendtech software a while back if you wanna play around with that for the tube design...
WHITE RHINO 03-11-2010, 05:26 PM That would be sweet

Blackdog76 05-19-2010, 11:23 AM Dude, that is going to be a sick front end. I frequently see tube front ends with tubes joining at sharp angles like you did with this one. Do you guys usually tig them or fit some kind of slug in there to make sure the joint is strong enough?
WHITE RHINO 05-20-2010, 05:07 PM I'm gunna mig it then cut out a slot on the back to slide .25 plate into te tubes lengthwise probably about 8 inches long then weld it all back together. Should be strong. Plus there will be alot more tube thrown at it
Blackdog76 05-20-2010, 10:03 PM I'm wondering if he did something similar with this front part.

Skoll 07-23-2010, 04:10 PM Lookin good i assume you did most of the fab work Rhino?
indeed. Rhino is the hired hand to do all the new design and fab work (he had no part in the original hi-tech redneck build - which is now about completely gone on the front half at least). I just get to do the bitch work on my truck and learn some shit so I can actually fab something up / repair damage / in the future.
WHITE RHINO 07-23-2010, 06:30 PM hahaha kevin is the grinding bitch! i just cut bend notch and weld all while drinking beer and coming up with some kind of design. everything from the cab cage forward is my work

WHITE RHINO 09-20-2010, 12:13 PM So we left my house around 3:30, stopped for food and gas then headed down to hollister. We originally planned to just rip around and not go in any of the trails because we had no tools or recovery equip. This was just a test run to make sure its running good and no suspension issues. Everything was working great so we went on the Coors canyon/bitch trail. This is the trail with the big V-wedge at the bottom and windshield smashing tree 3/4 way up. The trail was fucccccked up and heavyily rutted and near vertical walls. Traction was really shitty with really loose dirt everywhere. Ended up flopping about 5 times, Walking back to the truck to get the highlift and ratchet straps from the towrig. Basically macguevered it and got out of Hollister around 10. Hollister is getting pretty gnarly!!!!

rock_slinger 01-24-2011, 03:10 PM Hows the steering working with such a short throw. Did you limit the ram? You are loseing alot of force with the short arms.
Skoll 01-24-2011, 03:18 PM It works sweet! The ram seems to have an excess of power from all the situations I've tested it in. We didn't limit the stroke of the ram.
Those were the ORD arms that came with their high steer kit and I didn't feel like paying for new/longer ones. The nice thing is the ram is far back and well protected.
The only trouble I'm having is the JIC-6 fittings that attach to the ram both continually leak - i've even tried replacing both of the fittings on the hose and torquing to JIC specs. . . Unfortunately Howe welded the ram fittings on so I can't replace those. I gotta give them a call one of these days.
rock_slinger 01-25-2011, 07:53 AM Whats stoping the knuckles from turning to far? Watch the ujoints cause they will bind and break if you are turning them to far. I have the ord arms also on a assist setup. It did not work very well with the ram mounted up high. It just did not have the power for my 42s. I moved the ram back down to the knuckle and was suprised at the difference.
Skoll 01-25-2011, 01:06 PM The stops on the knuckles do hit the axle and provide a full max rotation limit, but you can feel the limits in the steering feedback pretty good. It's more of a don't hammer on it too hard while it's in full lock situation. After about 5 runs on it she's still holding up nicely.
The additional leverage from moving it out farther would certainly be better on the pump and entire system, but it's a little late now. The ram is mounted up perfectly in line with the existing arms. It seems to have plenty of power and turns extremely fast either direction so i'm not too worried about it. I might put some pitbull 44's on it next so we'll see how that performs. If i break some u joints/shafts it's a good excuse to upgrade - one of the shafts is stock anyway.
I did move the reservoir to be about 6in away from the pump and that has definitely helped.

Are you missing the brace from the T-case to the transmission bell housing?
Skoll 05-11-2011, 02:34 PM Are you missing the brace from the T-case to the transmission bell housing?
Are you referring to the two rods that were about 1/4" thick coming off the bellhousing? Those got scrapped when we tubed the front half, but I thought those ran up to the motor?... The only thing supporting the t-case/tranny is a thick Polyurethane mount that is attached to the adapter between the t-case and the tranny - which is of course bolted to the skid plate.
WHITE RHINO 05-11-2011, 02:42 PM or are you thinking the cast piece. There was never one on this truck straight t/case to trans. Its out of an IFS truck to give driverside drop
Blackdog76 05-13-2011, 11:04 AM This is what I'm talking about. I've heard that it was used by GM to keep the case from cracking from torque and the front shaft bottoming out.
