Being a lefty, I like the idea, but having to take the handle off every time you want to remove the BCG would suck. ( something else to wear out too )

Being a lefty this is something for you:

The guy at 6mmAR.com builds his uppers this way but will not sell the receivers . I'm looking to do this for my 300 Whisper upper when I turn the gas off for single shot suppressed fire. It would be easier to cycle than standard pull.

ASA side charger. I am not a fan of a reciprocating charging handle

Myself, I prefer the handle on the right side ( think AK ). You don't have to break your grip to charge the gun...

I think for what you intend to do, it would work well.

I look at that and think - right handed shooter ;)

x2 as long as it still ejects on the right side. your off hand charges the weapon.

True.. I guess I need to stop being a penny pinching ass and pony up. Sell my current receiver and upgrade to an ASA.

To bad it's left pull and left eject.

Am I wrong, or is that an L1A1 charging handle?

it should NOT be hard to mill a left side slot in an upper and drill/tap a hole for a charge handle if you like that style.
save cash and keep your upper

Doc - How do you like the ASA? Been thinking about one for a while. I saw the initial build, but haven't seen any positive or negative comments from you about it. Got any more close-ups of the rifle?

LOOOOOVE it
the upper has been flawless, my only gripes are the charging handle could be a little bigger and I have to remember to push the charging handle home when locking it to the rear and THEN hitting the bolt release

I just need to figure my accuracy issues with the rifle.

Didn't think of that. Thank you for potentially saving me from breaking my thumb.

that's gay then. it is no good for left of right hand shooters. right hand shooters get brass in the face. left hand shooters have to completely come off the weapon to charge it. and what's the point if it still has the rear charging handle?

I think this will be a reason to build a new rifle.:D

Anybody thought of using a CX4 charging handle? You'd have to mill a slot in the left side with a hole further back than the BCG goes during normal cycling. The way it works is the handle is on a shaft with two flats milled in it. Break the gun open, slide the BCG back, pop the handle out the hole, pull the BCG out. To install you would slide the BCG in so that the pocket lines up with the hole on the upper, pop the handle in, and slide it forward.

It would require two mill bits. The upper would get a slot, then a larger hole at the rear end of it. The BCG would get a pocket, then another oblong pocket (helps keep the handle aligned) at the bottom of the first.

Seems like it would be simple to do. Would still reciprocate, but would be easier to take apart than the ones that are threaded in. I can take apart my CX4 and take pictures if anybody wants them.

EDIT: Also, does anybody have an idea on how to plug the charging handle slot? Even if an ASA one could be sourced, the upper looks different in that area. Keep the CH and just don't use it?

My guess is that there's no good way to plug it so he just left the damn thing there.

For the machine work and time it would be easier to just buy a ASA unless someone wants to do it cheap.:D

It looks an awful lot like an adapted L1A1 charging handle, to me.

who makes that?

thats bad ass its kinda like the charging handle on the Robinson M96

edit I re read the thread and saw it was ASA.

I would love to see that in a LMT monolithic platform.
