I've searched all over this board and can't find the answer.

Basics:

'95 YJ 4.0L/Stock Auto trans/NP231 w/SLE 1TonCV drive shaft
SOA front D60 rear 14-bolt 5.13r/p 36 TSL-SXs

Got the project off the jackstands early spring and I've been wheeling all summer.

Problem: When climbing steep angles in 4-Low (past about 45 degrees) the transmission/torque converter drops out and I roll back. It'll catch again when the angle reduces but drops out again when I get into the climb. Fluid levels are fine.

Anybody have an idea what's wrong before I tear into the tranny?

Thanks in advance.

I have a 94 YJ 4.0/999/D300 and have never had a problem with the tranny on steep climbs. I had the stock pan and now have the deep pan for the extra fluid capacity. I say get the deep pan and see what happens.

My TJ will do that every once in a while, pisses me off...as well as scares me haha.

Hey Rockslut, Just curious...did you use your 231 when you have yoru 38s? I'm thinkin bout puttin a 4:1 in my 231 and ill be running 38.5 SXs. Just curious as how it held up.

I have only ran a D300 in my rig. With the SX's i had a GM D44 and with the 40's I have a GM D60
