I found a travelall pretty cheap, it's got some surface cancer but is in really good shape. What do you IH guys think? Wicked tow rig project? Let me know what y'all think. It would be a unique tow rig.

I fixed it for ya :flipoff2:

I think a Travelall would be a cool tow rig these days since everyone has to have a bombed late model diesel.

Not super-unique, mostly since they were pretty popular in their time for towing stuff.

My choice for stock-ish would be a "square-body" 1969-75 3/4T 4x4. "1200/1210" or "200" badging with a FF Dana 60 rear, and a '44 up front. 74/75 with discs, but rotors for 'em are $250 a pop - so maybe swap in a 8-lug 44 or 10-bolt from a Chevy.

A Travelall has a 119" (120 in 74/75) wheel base - longer than a short-box pickup, but shorter than a typical long box, so it isn't a LOONG wheelbase tow rig (like, say, my 4dr long-box 166" WB Travelette) but it could be just fine. Room for 6 adults up front, and optional 3rd row seating if you need it. Rear was designed to take a 4x8 sheet of plywood with the rear seat folded down, so an air-mattress could be a cool upgrade for the rear, too.

392/5spd direct would be nice, but even a 304/4spd or 727 is up to the job.

My clapped out 1/2T would pull down 9mpg with the 392/727 combo towing my Scout around Montana.

You know the perfect towrig motor swap for a Travelall would be a late 80's/early 90's 7.3 n/a International IDI!!!

Agreed, and Robert (JetFxr) has already done the swap - look around and you'll see his step-side Travelette with 60/14-bolt, 38s, 7.3/5spd etc.

I even know where I could get my hands on everything I'd need to do the conversion... but for me, at this point, I have too much money sunk into my hot-rod 392 gasser.

Find me a 12v 6bt for my Toterhome, and you can have the 7.3IDI!!

(I really don't mind the 7.3. It's a super reliable motor. I would like a turbo for a little better fuel economy--maybe I should look for a Banks kit)

Wanna know where JetFxr's 7.3 IDI came from? a Uhaul he owned for a while. :D The Spicer 5spd used to live in a UHaul, too.

That wouldn't really be a sleeper anymore, would it?

I was looking into a turbo for my 7.3 IDI, but after doing some research and asking questions on oilburners.net and ford-trucks.com and found out that not too long after a turbo is installed you'll start seeing issues with the added stress to the motor ... (was looking into it before i went broke on the Heep) :D

The Toterhome would sound :grinpimp: with that 5" exhast and a Banks Sidewinder Turbo screaming ...

Did I hear a story that Robert (JetFxr) wrecked the Travelette? Dude that truck was so incredible. Hope there are plans to resurrect it if that is true.

The non-turbo motors are dogs. They make more smoke than power. When we moved to Colorado our U-haul had a non-turbo diesel in it, pulling the Scout and our junk, we did a whopping 35mph up the pass on I-70. Freakin' VW bugs were passing us.

Find a turbo'd motor if you go diesel.

worked on my friends 90 f350 with a 7.3 idi CTS turbo. Some playin with the pump and a EGT gauge, they will out pull a big block and run like a raped ape.

i got this on a friends farm f350 4x4 NA for $1000.oo and my friend got his Lariat duly turbo 7.3 for $2500.oo they are good pulling trucks for dirt cheap
