I got three Scout II axles to do and if I make this thing adjustable in the middle it'll be set for anyone else that needs it too!

I've often thought about building a stand. IF I did, I'd build a stand similar to that, but to turn the knuckles, I'd simply weld a plate on each end that will accept the spindle studs and hold them so that the knuckles have 6* of caster. Then have the bottle jack mounted to the base of the stand such that it pushes up (in a safe manner) on the pumpkin till I get the amount of twist I want. Then you can weld it as it sits which makes sure nothing moves as well as your camber doesn't go out of adjustment.

Mark, Todd in Spokane has a Jig just as you describe thats adjustable for different widths.

Your idea was taken long ago by Jim Weed of the Binder Bunch in Colorado. It was described in detail on his web site on offroad.com IIRC, if not there then it was in an earley Binder Bulletin newsletter issue. Additionally it was talked about alot on the Binder bulletin circa 1997ish-1999. Seeing how the ends are a interfearance toleranced fit, I highley doubt the camber would go out. You would have almost 3" of surface on the tube so to get it cockeyed, you would need to really be f***ing something up good.

AH! I knew I saw one like that once. For some reason I thought it was @ Anything Scout. Good call John.

AllScoutsPlus ~ 'Bill's' old shop. Man I remember that place. I went to see him just after he started it. I liked the 'thrones' ~ anyway it was Bill who got me into building Scout stuff, and his 70 800a that was my first Scout 'Lil Mule'.

Does anybody know where Bill is at these days. Is he still putting on the West Coast Scout events? Great guy would have had a great shop up until the point of the investors claiming the biz as a loss the first year.

I remember that thing. Nothing in particular (too long ago), but the rear seat was :smokin: ~ then the battery cables in the engine compartment. Top notch stuff on that rig.

allright, time for a cut n turn - need to go from 16 degrees to 6..

I did it the first time when I narrowed the axle but I basically chopped off the C's, ground down and then put them back on, this time I just want to turn them. Any tips before I break out the grinder? It was mentioned leave it on the rig, probably a stupid question but any particular reason I need to strip it down to a housing rather than just leave it all together?

i didn't do a big fancy jig. left it installed and just ground out the joint till i found the crack. broke out the rosebud got it nice and hot, not red though, and went after it with a 10# sledge.
the only problem was a divit in the garage floor from where the jack stand leg dug in while i was beating it.
i had to beat the crap out of the first one, drivers side. almost gave up but finally got it. the other side went in about ten hits.

I like to take them out of the truck- grind them and get them broken free/moving - reinstall in the truck and hammer it into place that way.

I've riden around the garage floor standing on top of enough axles (imagine surfing an axle) trying to knock the ends off to know I don't weigh enough to keep them held down. The truck has me by a couple hundred pounds so that really makes it easier.

BUT I've also thought of building a jig....

+1 on what uglyscout said, you can do it with the axle bolted in the whole time, but it's easier if you pull the axle out of the Scout. It makes it easier to get a good clean line ground around the inner C. Reinstall in the Scout, (on jackstands), set pinion angle and heat and beat the inner Cs into submission. Remove the knuckles so you can whale on the inner Cs, otherwise the knuckle/brakes, etc will be in the way, plus it makes checking caster easier, too.
