I run a 12" Luk-Pro Gold clutch kit behind my 454 w/Hayes flywheel.
So far so good, no complaints.

12 inch OEM clutch that I bought used off a guy running it behind a 396.

Smoke it every time I get on it hard....got to get something a little more stout.

heres a tip:
Let off the clutch pedal prior to acceleration.

The only mcleod twin disk Ive driven were in drag cars and though they work great for that application I wouldnt want to drive one on the trail. They grip hard and when you try and slip them they chatter.

X3 same for me running doublers, 38's, and a boosted vortec 350. locks up solid every time

If you don't mind, what's the price on those now? I have a good used one for a 454 that I'll be selling soon.

Cool, I was hoping ~$250 was out of line and that makes me feel better. I do appreciate the info.

X4 you really only need a bad ass clutch when your running a high hp engine. Otherwise your pissing your money away. My 12" works really good, and locks up tight. no complaints but i am only running 35's till the 1 tons get stuffed in.

What do you consider a high horsepower engine?

I'm rockin a 6" rod,Dart headed TBI 383 infront of my 465. I thought I would put a hot shit ceramic button clutch( like what an old SBC dump truck would have) since this engine makes killer torque. That fawker was pulled out two weeks later. Felt like it didn't grab all the way and had way to much pedal effort, even with a hydro clutch.I put a fresh stock 12" Fenco in it and it seems to hold up fine. my guesstimate is about 425-450 lbs ft and 325-350 hp??

Yeah I posted and then noticed that but got too lazy to edit. :flipoff2:

You have high enough hp. I think any performance clutch is good enough, no need for 1000+ hp rated ones...unless you like doing arobics while shifting.

A big 1 ton with close to 600 is gonna require a lot of force, especially with big tires. i can get my 12" stocker to slip if Im mean to it. but then i would ask the question of why do you need 600 hp in a 1 ton...

other then "its cool" :D

Clutch is installed and has great holding power and a very short throw with less than stock pedal pressure. I am very pleased but it is going to take some getting used to. Not much slipping the clutch though its in or its out.

I have put a few thousand miles on the clutch now so I have a better review.

Pro's
-Soft pedal
-Very little pedal movement to engage/disengage
-Holding power is good
-Little to no chatter

Con's
-Price
-Whole truck shakes if you try and slip it. It likes to be engaged/disengaged quikly(fine for street driving sucks when trying to inch up to or over something)
-In 3rd and 4th gear I have to be carefull and make sure the clutch is fully engaged before hitting the gas or it will slip.(to be expected but sucks when your trying to quickly run through the gears. Or shoud I say drive like a douche bag and try to break the tires loose in 3rd and 4th:rolleyes:)

Overall I am pleased with the performance of the mcleod twin disc clutch. I would recommend for anything exept a rockcrawler.

you say "twin disc" does it actualy have 2 friction discs or is it a dual friction disc[2 materials on one disc]?

I run a southbend dual disk in my diesel. I would imagine it is a bit differant with the gasser making a lot less tq but if mine gets a lil grabby I do a hard 3rd gear lauch (6spd) and it will smooth it out for a while, and that is what is recomended by the manufacturer believe it or not. You may try a hard 2nd launch and see if that helps any. Once you get to big power and dual disk clutches you have to compromise but I have yet to find anything with the holding power of a DD and still retain good street manners.

The clutch has very good road manners for daily driving. The only time It pisses me off is when im trying to inch back to a trailer or squize into a parking spot. Engagement and disengagement is smooth it just doesn't like anything int The middle. I have a 309 duration cam, 4.56 r&p, mechanical clutch linkage and a detroit in the rear so it will never ride and drive like a porsche. Hell I had to use google to even spell porsche...:D

Wap,

What kind of power is your diesel putting out?

wap
12-02-2009, 01:51 PM
I havent put it on the rollers so cant say for sure, but it should be over 600hp on the conserative side and if I spent some time tuneing on a dyno I believe it is capable of 700hp, but once I bolted the twins on I was satisfied where its at and really dont need any more hp. If I had to quess on the tq it should be in the 1200ft/lb range.

Its an 05 dodge with 125ish sticks, and a set of twins set up for 850hp along with the other usual stuff like progammer bla bla bla

The clutch I am running is the SBC 3600dd with ceramic disks. I haul livestock with this truck from time to time and it isnt too jerky. In first it is never bad, but I take on in second most of the time and you can feel a lil shudder if you dont get it just right. Also you can try increasing your rpms when you take off. That helps the diesels, but not sure on gas. Its been a long time since I did any wrenching on a gas motor that made any real power.
