i tried this in the non hardcore jeep section, but didnt have much luck over there. i have just aquired a 94 grand wagoneer to replace my xj as a daily driver, parts runner, etc. i do occasionally tow a 5x10 trailer with my xj,so hopefully that counts qualifies it to be here in the tow rig section :)

anyway,it has a wierd transmission issue. reverse does not work, but feels like its doing something. the jeep tries to move forward in neutral and park.

if i drive down the street in drive 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are fine. if i drive it down the road in neutral,it wont upshift out of first,so i think its staying in first in park, reverse, and neutral.

shift cable is fine and the tranny has the same issues if i pop the cable off and move the arm on the tranny manually.

i have not pulled the pan yet. im not afraid of any kind of automotive work, but i really have no idea what to look for.

engine is a 4.0 if that makes a difference.

just wonderin if anyone has any ideas before i take it to a tranny shop for a scan and some diagnostic work.

Sounds like you have forward clutch pack issues.

what kind of issues? something fixable by pulling the pan?

an update- i finally broke down and pulled it. the clutches in the forward drum had "welded" themselves together for lack of a better way to describe it. there was no friction material left on any of them.

tranny guy said cause was getting it real hot-prolly giving it hell while real low on fluid. he also said only reason it still moved was because of how they were stuck together. likely a matter of time before they broke apart and i had no drive instead of drive in all gears
