: Height to Width ratio?
mudtruck44 09-09-2002, 08:20 AM A comment on another thread the other day got me thinking about this. I went out and measured my truck and found that it is about 6" wider than it is high. I think it is pretty stable with that set up. I am willing to bet that many people have not thought about this, but I am wondering what the hight/width is of some other vehicles especially competition rigs.
wngrog 09-09-2002, 08:29 AM I am currently the same width as I am height to the top of the cage.
I have been having rollover problems of late and am embarking on a lowering/widening project that should get me 3-4 inches lower and 4" wider.
My Toy is taller than it is wide. My Jeep was wider than tall. But, the Jeep was a lot more unstable due to the short wheelbase. The Toy is probably more likely to roll IF it goes sideways. But to date, it never has. On the other hand, the Jeep went sideways a LOT, and nearly rolled a couple of times.
Talkin' competition mudders here BTW.

350 Samurai 09-09-2002, 09:03 AM My rig is 11" wider than it is tall. It is not a competition vehicle, but it is incredibly stable.
Scott@Rockstomper 09-09-2002, 09:39 AM 92" wide, 77" tall on the high side of the cage (the truck sits 2-3" off-level sideways due to bent springs that I haven't replaced yet) and it's pretty stable. I flip it fairly frequently anyway.
elf_cruiser 09-09-2002, 03:02 PM Mine is 96" wide, and the top of the cage is about 7 ft high. But really, when sitting in it, there is nothing above your ass that has any real weight. Just a few tubes, and the seat backs. So yeah, mine is also extremely stable. Most comp rigs are narrower and smaller 'cause they have to worry about cones.
YELLER BLAZER 09-09-2002, 03:11 PM Mine is 94" wide and 90" tall and will sit well past 45 degrees before going over, don't ask how I know.
mudtruck44 09-09-2002, 03:16 PM One reason I am wondering is beacuse I am narrowing some fullsize Dana 44's for my Willy's. I was thinking about going Scout width, but I don't know if I would be better off with a little more width.
elf_cruiser 09-09-2002, 03:20 PM mudtruck, just leave em fullwidth... Full width rocks!!
mudtruck44 09-09-2002, 03:46 PM Well, a Willys is pretty narrow body. I am thinking that I might just narrow one side and make it like 63". That is still pretty wide.
Hey Jess, the bronco is 80" wide, 72" tall.
BrettM 09-09-2002, 05:59 PM 78" wide 70" tall...
It's just a little MJ, SOA on 33s, a daily driver for a poor college student, but it sure is fun and I've yet to roll it with it's very low COG.
BillaVista 09-09-2002, 06:06 PM Overall Length 141"
Overall Width 84"
Body Width 61.5"
Height 71.5"
Wheelbase 105"

FULLSIZE 09-09-2002, 06:24 PM i've thought about this also. when i lowered my old jeep 3", it was way more stable. i plan to run 44's on my power wagon with only a 4" lift to get it as low as possible. one thing i'm concerned with going with that little of a lift will be how low my rocker guards will be. how much clearance do you have at the rockers?

Join the club, Nolen. My 4Runner thing is in the middle of a lowering and widening project. It's a slow project for me, but I'm making some progress. That flatbed on the back will help me eventually lower it 3" there. The forthcoming reversal of my factory shackle setup and re-worked front hangers will allow to get about 2-3" lower up front. I also plan to go 3" wider in the front and 4" wider in the back.
Right now, I'm about 3" taller than I am wide. When I'm done, those stats should be reversed. When I'm done... that's a problem with all my projects!
rockhog 09-09-2002, 09:23 PM I thought about this the whole time when building my commado.
As of now it is 82 tall and 86" wide. It is very stable. The wheel-
base stands at 105".
skinny 09-09-2002, 11:32 PM body 46.5 inches at the widest point
69 inches tall
73 inches wide outside of tire to outside of tire
101 inch wheelbase
24.5 inches of belly clearance at lowest point
on 42s
comp rig
Jason R 09-09-2002, 11:42 PM its no fun if you cant flop it! :flipoff2:
When I build my rig im goin for 38.5"s and a really low COG...thanks to massive fender trimming. :D
TheNerple 09-10-2002, 11:22 AM You really need to take into consideration sprung to unsprung weight ratio. On my pile I have pretty much nothing when it comes to sprung weight and with the rockwells the unsprung weight is pretty great. It is also wide yes, but I'm sure it would be more stable than most people's rigs with narrower axles.

When you say "Willys", do you mean pickup?
Here's one that's full-width on 38.5X11's & 39.5's:

RockRover 09-10-2002, 11:59 AM Yes I agree, we need to look at sprung weight v.s. un-sprung weight ratio's for a more accurate look at where our vertical and horizontal CG's are.
I have an aluminum tub, hood and fenders...And a battery box under my seat which raises my seat up 7" from the floor...Which in turn raises my B pillar 7" from a standard (CJ, Toy, etc) B pillar...Does this make my CG any more or less then that of another rig when taking into consideration the aluminum body? Probably not (I hope!).

yup, overall hieght means nothing
cg or where the wieght is located IS the game
how tall your whip antenna is dont matter
XtrmTJ 09-10-2002, 12:21 PM Is,
80 in. wide,
74 in. high,
and a 97 in. wb.
Good ?
WOLF359 09-10-2002, 12:32 PM 94 wide, 92 tall, 105 wb
4Bangler 09-10-2002, 01:25 PM Short, fat, and hairy.
Oh....you meant the Jeep, I dunno, it's 250 miles away. I would bet that with the right component and gear placement, height over width wouldn't matter at all. You don't have to sacrafice clearance to gain stability, just get the weight down as low as possible.
Stability is a product of roll axis and center of gravity, obscene width can offset a higher COG to some extent, image a very low roll axis and COG that was high, but with a huge ground contact area (very wide axles) so that the COG could pivot 90 degrees to either side and still be within the contact area, yeah, the body would bobble around like one of those little dogs in the back window, but the thing wouldn't roll until it was almost vertical.
Frank Daless did an awesome write up on finding COG and roll-over angle for your vehicle, and it will be my bible when I do the 4-link this winter.

Dan shsss 09-10-2002, 03:26 PM My rig is 94" wide and 82" tall and it refuses to roll over, but all my weights down low
SolidAxleDurango 09-10-2002, 03:52 PM My D stands fairly square... about 77" wide and also about 77" tall. The wheelbase is 116 and overall length is 193. Fairly stable too.
