I have this tranny behind a 383 TPI in my Jeep. Friday I was commin home from my buddies shop after gettin new tires and I smelled tranny fluid. When I got home I checked the fluid and it was fine. The next day as I started to leave for the local trails, it would not shift out of first!!! I was hoping that someone might have an idea as to what would cause this, so that when I take it to the shop I don't get totally hossed. The day before was the fist time this tranny was ever above 30-35 due to the death wobble of 38.5 tslsx's, I don't know if that matters or not.
Thanks

It sounds like it may be toast hard to tell without pulling the pan and seeing what it looks like in there. Also check to make sure that your TV cable isn't broken or unhooked, if it is the safety on the valve body will only let it shift like it's at full throttle.

I'm not sure if the 700 has a vacuum modulator like older 350-400's (never owned a 700) but if you don't have a vacuum signal to the modulator it won't shift out of 1st, I have had this problem a few times. maybe someone can help you out and tell you wether the 700 has a vac. modulator...just a thought

How high did you rev it up trying to get it to shift? I've had a couple that lost the 2-4 band (due to a pressure leak, that ultimatly smoked the band). After checking the fluid and TV cable, try rapping it out, and see if it will hit 3rd gear. If you have R, 1, and 3, then you've prolly smoked the band.

most likely the TV cable wasnt adjusted properly and you toasted the damn thing. i did the exact same thing. shitty part was i paid 500 bucks for it. anyhow i bought a whole new truck that had a th350/np203 for 250 dollars! but it doesnt have as good gearing as the 700. im guessing that you should try and adjust the tv cable. if that doesnt work you might be out a lot of money unless you can rebuild one yourself(not me)

Check the governor. It is near the tailshaft under a round cover. It is driven by plastic/teflon gear that can break. Usually this will happen if you lock up rear tires hard and then let of the brake quickly, as in rain slicked roads. It is cheap, and easy to check.
