: Prepping for an offroad trip. Buy a locker or new hubs?

I've got a couple weeks until the trip, but it catches me in between pay days. I might not buy anything and take my chances depending on how the money situation is. Just wondering what you think I should get. I kind of want some additional security of being able to make it off a given trail under my own power just incase I blow another hub. Of course, hubs are cheaper so that might be what it comes down to but as much sand and trails as my truck sees, I don't think a locker would be a bad investment at all. What do you say?

I would definately go with a locker. My preference would be to go with an ARB, if you got the dough.

I think you should buy a flame suit first you are gonna need it.

for a spare hub I would go to a pick and pull and get a drive flange from a full time four wheel drive. This should cost you $4.00 at the most. I don't know what rear axle you have but if it is not a 14 bolt swap it to one before you buy a detroit, and you will be money ahead.

You're asking 2 separate questions. The locker is an upgrade. the hub is a spare part that should be carried anyway.

If you buy a locker, you won't have as much wheel spin, which will help keep your hubs in one piece.

As for the winch, I'd much rather have a pair of lockers and a hi-lift first.

Hey Kevin, don't worry about either. I got a few drive flanges I'll be bringing along and you don't need lockers for these trails. But like the one guy said, if you plan on upgrading axles anytime, might as well wait and get a locker for them instead.

I hate Pathetic Newbie posts.. search for the cheapest best mod you can get for 5 bucks its called, ( welded spider gears)

search 14 bolt, there are several sites. I can't find the link right now, so your SOL.

This doesn't apply to those who offered helpful replies, to those of you who provided real information, thank you. Just because it says NEWBIE on this board doesn't mean there's a lack of experience. Calling me a newbie was fine, but calling my simple query for opinions pathetic was out of line. It was a legitimate question I posed. And I'm not building something to compete in a tough truck competition. The 10-bolt is strong enough for my 33s and my stock 350. A 14-bolt would be nice, but I'm not gonna do an axle swap for my yearly venture to the GWNF.

I've had the truck eat a Warn premium hub and stick me on the beach, so I'm wary of such. The locker seemed like the logical way to go. I don't think welded spiders have any place in my daily driver. The LWB alone makes turning impossible...

Thanks for the info everybody.
