: .41 Magnum--Cartridge Opinions?
Diesel Smoke 06-16-2009, 02:58 AM I have some Scout II parts up for sale and I've been offered a .41 magnum as partial trade. I have in the past wanted a 41, and this is a Blackhawk with a 5"-6" barrel. Over all it's a gun I'd buy on my own.
As with all ammo about now it seem non-existent on store shelves. I can get brass, lead cast bullets and powder. Then it would be a matter of tracking down the primers for it. I am looking for opinions of the cartridge. The gun would mainly be a sidearm while hiking, biking and wheeling. No hunting with it. I have looked at a few reloading manuals with very limited information on load for the cartridge. I don't mind hand loading, and while I don't have a loader I have a buddy who's got the goody's and I can use them if I want. Opinions?
SilverZuk 06-16-2009, 05:11 AM IMO the best magnum handgun cartridge out there. For a whitetail hunting round, it out performs the 44 mag and all others.
I always wanted one, but steered clear of them due to availability (even though I hand load
Fisheadgib 06-16-2009, 05:14 AM It's an awsome caliber. I own three .44 mags and I still want a .41 mag. There's a lot more bullets available now for it and in some bullet weights, it carries more energy out farther than a .44 mag! And it has a better BC than a .44.
PONY_DRIVER 06-16-2009, 05:21 AM I want one, but it's not high on the list. If you're not hard up for money and always wanted one I'd go for it.

I am not hard up for cash, just cash for projects! LOL
Protecsafari 06-16-2009, 06:16 AM The .41 magnum may be more efficient and offer some ballistic advantage in specific (light for .44 mag) bullet weights, but the .44 magnum is capable of more power, can be loaded with heavier bullets.
If you want a .41, by all means get one.
I prefer the .44 magnum.
chzbrgr 06-16-2009, 06:54 AM I have a Blackhawk .41 w/ 6". Great round, taken many white tails. That revolver isn't the most comfortable for extended range sessions ( it's got some bite) but for what you describe would great.
Redmist 06-16-2009, 08:49 AM I use a real late model Smith 657 .41 magnum for bear medicine, and I also shoot comp with it in IHMSA...
This is one of my favorite guns! They stopped making the 657 and I got one of the last three in the sportsmans wharehouse stock. Non fluted cylinder FTW!
Anyhow...
I reload for defensive rounds using:
20gr of H110
Win WLP Primer
Hornady 210gr HP/XTP
O.A.L. 1.580
REM Brass
Comp load is
19.6gr H110
CCI-350
Sierra 210gr JHC
1.580 OAL
REM brass
Win brass works fine also

PONY_DRIVER 06-16-2009, 09:47 AM Oooh, pretty!
kneedownnate 06-16-2009, 10:46 PM I'd jump on it! I've wanted one of the titanium taurus revolvers in .41 mag since I first saw them, just can't get em here in california.
Diesel Smoke 06-22-2009, 03:18 AM Well, it looks like the deal is not going to work out. The other party had some unexpected expenses come up, which is understandable. I am bummed, I was getting excited about my first wheel gun.:(
Ah Pook 06-22-2009, 12:42 PM I kinda like the .41 mag. but don't want another mouth to feed. Ammo is not easy to find around here.
I'm sticking with .44 mag. It just seems more versatile, plus I can walk into a hardware store and buy ammo. I also like the idea of a caliber matching revolver/lever action.
Redmist 06-22-2009, 04:07 PM Marlin makes a .41 mag lever gun!
Gozuki 06-22-2009, 05:26 PM I like the .44 (edit- better) too. I waited to find my S&W .44 mountain gun.

I didn't need to hear that.
