I already posted this in the other thread, but figured you didn't see it:

350sammy - sorry to get off-topic here, but what did you make your rear links out of?? I was just checkin out the pics you linked and i saw this one:
http://www.rattlerock.com/images/Tellico,%20Labor%20Day/P9010088.JPG

How did that happen? Did you land on something and bend it? Or did it bend from axle wrap?? I am starting the plans for my front CO suspension, and i want to know what happened...

Thanks a ton!!

That was 2" schedule 80 seamless pipe. It actually held up pretty good. I was in the gas pretty hard and went about 2 feet in the air and came down hard on a rock on just the link. It didn't bend that far at first, but I backed up, and that wheel was trying to climb a rock and it bent it the rest of the way.

I decided to make new links out of DOM and see how well they hold up. It's all experimental you know. The new ones are going to be made out of the metal below. It is 1 1/2" .400 DOM. I am using two pieces, one on top of the other, with about a 1/2" gap between the two. About every 8" will be a small piece of 1/4" plate connecting the two, for support.

I have a friend running them on his rig now, with rockwells and a 454 and they are holding up well.

Anyone need a good high clearance link?

I used 500 wal DOM and I think I will be alright. Anything less is :rainbow:

If it was just slightly longer it looks as if it might fit.....that's some thick tubing...have you ever thought about just going double tube with fish mouth ends.... one completely inside the other with a few rosette welds if you wanted but not necessary....its my opinion that this is stronger then one thick piece.....

well, i want clearanced arms like the assasin, so i am very concerned about strength. Does anyone know how .25 wall 4140 HT will hold up vs. .500 wall A500 series??

The specs say that the 4140 is twice as strong, so can i get away with using .25, not .500??

Ten bucks without the joints and it's yours. :flipoff2:

No, I'm putting another piece of pipe in it and keeping it for a spare, so if it happens again, I won't be down for the day.

I used 1-1/2 by .100 wall 4130 when I did my 4-link. I ran a year on them before they showed any significant dammage (a slight bow developed, after MANY rock bashings). Given, my truck only weighs 3K and has a rice burner motor.

Everyone laughed at me when I put it together, but after of year of abuse everyone agreed that chromoly is TOUGH stuff!

I just hope you don't plan to try and bend that 1/4" 4140! :)

make the arms like WMS does if you want high clearance. Yes the 1/4 inch 4140 arms would be less likely to bend than 1/2 inch wall A50 arms assuming the same OD. As long as the wall thickness is enough that the tube doesn't dent you are better off going up in OD than in wall thickness, but building a truss like WMS does can be even stronger for the same weight. be carefull if you weld the 4140 in cross sections that thick. I have seen a good number of 4140 racecar parts that failed because of not following proper weld procedures, the stuff is not nearly as forgiving as 4130, or maybe it is just the larger cross sections that 4140 parts usually come in.

Thanks Gordon - Just the kind of info i needed. I will definitely be using a "web" on each bend for reinforcement, and if there is room, I will do like WMS and isue two separate tubes with "web" in between...

Thanks!

Here's the new ones. I still have to put in the connecting pieces between the two pieces.

I LIKE IT!

do you still have good clearance at your frame mount? It pretty wide at the bushing.

Pretty much the same clearance as I had before. We'll see how they do in Tellico this weekend. Meeting Toytek and his wife/spotter and some other ERoCC competitors. Seems they want to ride somewhere without cones for a while.
