: full hydro steering

I am doing full hydro steering.
Using a standard hydraulic cylinder will make the steering faster one way than the other because the volume of the rod in one side. So if it was supposed to be 4 turns lock to lock it would be 4 turns one way and about 3 the other. Is the difference noticable on the road?
Another way to do it is to have 2 cylinders. That would allow equal turns lock to lock, but i am told they will go out of balance. Anyone done this and had problems?
Double ended cylinder would solve it, but $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.

Don't worry about it, crawling on the rocks you will never notice the difference.

over her in OZ comps require road registration, to do that an engineer has to drive it, inspect etc etc.
So will you notice it if you drive it on the road?

i run the regular run of the mill single ended ram for my full hydro setup. yes it is noticeable on the road. you will have to turn the wheel further one way to achieve the same turning distance as you do turning the other way. you kinda get used to it but then again i do not run my jeep on the road much. off road it really isn't an issue. i have seen a jeep that worked well with two single ended rams but that is all the info i have on it.

High5, thanks for the info. I have fitted a few full hydro set ups on tractors using a standard cylinder. At tractor speed it isnt really noticeable, i just wanted to know if it was a pain at road speeds. It wont go that fast with rockwells and 14r20 michelins anyway!

I don't know what the heck the 2 cylinders "going out of balance" is??

Lots of commercial vehicles use 2 single ended rams - including the big aircraft tug tractors on the base here.

If you've got room, I say go with 2 single ended, if you've got the $$ go with the double ended.

I've never noticed the difference while driving. When you think about it, you very seldom turn the wheels very far while driving down the road.
I will say that my full hydro setup is not fun to drive on the street, it works great off road, but is very uncomfortable on blacktop. Part of the problem may be the very quick ratio I have in the steering arm, it is about 2 1/2 turns from lock to lock, it's very fast off road, but not very forgiving on blacktop.
I'd like to hear from some of the guys who have gone with the dbl. ended cyl. and a load reactive valve as to how that system handles on blacktop.

Now is full hydro steer legal on the street? I have heard some say it is and it isnt. Anyone know whats the truth in Cali?

Also would you WANT to drive this on the street? Seems like itd be pretty scary on the freeway...
