I just got a 1973 scout 2 that has an SOA lift on it. The problem is it isn't done right. The axle has been rotated forward to improve the driveline angle but now the steering knuckles lean forward. They are probably about 6 degrees forward instead of 4 degrees backward. The axle is a Dana 30 with drum brakes. What would be my best/cheapest option to fix this? It currently has 33's on it and the largest I would want to run would be 35's.

The options I see are:
1.) cut and rotate the knuckles good: cheap Bad: still a Dana 30 and drum brakes
2.) Find a matched set of full width axles that are already SOA from a junk yard and swap them in. Good: heavier duty axle, add more stability to the rig, have disk brakes up front Bad: Harder to find a passenger side diff front axle, will most likely have to buy new/different rims.

I would like to get this scout going as easily and cheaply as possible so any info you guys could give me would be great.

there are a bunch of different ways to get where you want to go. I suggest you search SOA here and on binderplanet.com If you are on a budget much of your decision will be based on what parts you can find for cheap. If you give your location you might find getting parts easier. Ive got a SII front disc brake 44 which might help but I don't know where you are

I am Logan, Utah. I have checked on binder planet and haven't found much help on there yet. How well will the dana 30 stand up to 33's or 35's with light trail wheeling?

I have the Dana 30 front and run 33's on all the trails out here without a problem, the only catch is you can't bomb into ditches without looking first...otherwise I've taken it up slickrock without any issues and I'm looking foward to the rubicon this year with some guys from the shop.

For the type of light wheeling I do a 30 would probably hold up fine but I would really like to replace the drum brakes on front for discs. It seems the easiest way to do this is to find a 74 or newer scout axle and then cut and turn it. Seeing as I will already have to do this on my current axle it shouldn't be any more work.

GM Passenger drop axles should not be hard to find. There are about $200 from the junk yard. The problem is finding one that is not hammered and needing a complete rebuild .

I would do the Cut-N-Turn on your axle as its good practice:evil: It will get you up and running fast while your looking for some replacements. You just need to have a few bills stashed away for when that deal comes your way. Somebody will upgrade there junk and need to sell there D44's or the neighbors kid wrecks his dads old truck and there selling it as is.

here one for a $100 bucks click here (http://atlanta.craigslist.org/pts/1223600508.html) too far from your house, but you get the idea.

I have been considering that option. That way I can put some money into other things and get a power booster to make the drum brakes more user friendly.

or find a dodge front axle, keep your rims, and get the discs

How big a difference will it make to go from front drums to discs?

SOA is a dumb idea, the CG will be too high and it will turn over when you try to go around a corner:homer:

It's no different than a 6" lift. What lift would you reccommend then to fit 33's?

crashhawk
06-18-2009, 06:40 AM
At least 14 inches to fit 33s, 18 to fit 35s.:shaking:

Go take R290's advice and come back when you've broken your 30, or your front drums and 33s make you careen into some gorge. Then ask a more educated series of questions and you'll get real answers. (If the questions you ask haven't been covered 1.8 million times already.)

At least 20" of lift and 500lbs. of welding rod. PM larboc

I recommend coil over shocks, but if you need to save cash I would use coil springs.

Just to get the scout going I am going to take R290's advice and do the cut and turn on my dana 30 and keep an eye out for a good deal on a d44.

Cut and turn a D30 in a total waste of time, I will give you a D44 if you want it:flipoff2:
