: 2wd taco sas
pickeledpigsfeet 06-17-2009, 07:20 AM I drive my rigs to the trail. My current 90 with the 22re turning iroks and pushing a exo and full bodied truck is sucking. I have been thinking about doing a 3rz swap, but smog becomes a hassle. So I can pickup a 2wd xcab taco(non prerunner) for cheap nowdays, and how about sasing it and throwing my w56 with tcases behind the 2rz or 3rz? i would also have to move my steering box and axles over as well.
is the 2wd frame much weaker than the 4wd? Is there any big hurdles? I have sased 3 toy 4runners/trucks in the past few years but they were all 2nd gen. I know that the 86-95 2wd trucks are not hard to sas either, there is actually less to cut off.
Daveyclimber 06-17-2009, 08:41 AM At the least you will need to plate the front rails with 3/16" sheet and either plate the rear rails with readily available kits or box the rear section. The belly of the frame is stout enough.
EarlKann 06-17-2009, 08:51 AM The Macho Taco started out as a 2wd. I think it's a good idea.
pickeledpigsfeet 06-17-2009, 09:56 AM are the front of the frames fully boxed on the 2wd? Should be a peice of cake to plate the outside all the way to cab. practicaly have to do it for the steering box and shock mounts anyways. do the frames have a different hump in the front that might be more of a problem with hysteer?
Do the brawlers have a website with a writeup on the macho taco?
edit: woops i saw the macho taco buildup is right in this forum. thanks!
Shefron 06-17-2009, 10:19 AM If you going to pick up a taco why not grab one with the 3.4L engine in it?

I like the 3.4 but then i would have to buy the adapter to go to my pass drop gear tcases. it would be cheaper to just bolt my current 90 w56 and tcases to the back of a 2rz or 3rz and then use the "stock" toy front axle that i have huge amounts of $ in rather than building a d44 or diamond for a driver's side drop.
if i didnt want to reuse my current junk then i would look for a 3.4 quad cab to sas and just do a 5spd conversion as i hate autos, even toy autos.
T1TNDRA 06-17-2009, 05:59 PM Just got done this week doing this same truck you speak of, It was really easy!! Alot easier than the 4wd of the same year. We did it with a toy axle and the older trans just like you want to do. :D
We just plated the frame and added one crossmember to make up for the ones we had to cut out..

perfect. where did you have to add the crossmember? did you link the front or run leaves? Did you have to swap oil pans? any other tips or tricks that you used?
thanks!

Left the stock oil pan and ran a crossmember behind the deep part of the pan and then added some corner style gussets in the front, we went spring under on this paticular truck to keep it stockish height with the parts we had laying around.. It is by far the simplest build i have done so far, took three days from teardown to driving.. Best advice i can give is have all the parts before you start..
Note... we also went under the frame for the shackles so we didnt have to make bent shacles. I'll try and get some picture for you, Plan on wheeling it the fourth of july :D, So i should have some action shots.
SSLT1KID 06-22-2009, 06:29 PM hwo much have you done to your 1990? (suspension, frame, etc) how hard would it be to swap a tacoma cab onto your 1990 frame?
pickeledpigsfeet 06-24-2009, 08:05 AM My 90 is built and exoed.
2 problems with just swapping the cab. First i would still have to do the motor swap as well as the cab swap. 2nd, swapping the cab just puts me back into legal issues that i dont want to deal with again. I want same vin on frame and cab as I cant rule out moving out of state at some point and dont want the hassle. so to me a cab swap and motor swap is way more work and time than just sassing a truck, especially if i already have built dialed in axles to swap in.
EarlKann 08-12-2009, 02:48 PM BTT cause there is a really cheap 2wd Tacoma on my local CL. :grinpimp:
Anyone else done this? T1TNDRA do you have any pictures or more specs on the build you did.

X2, I'd like to know as well!
EarlKann 09-08-2009, 04:08 PM No one? T1TNDRA? Anyone have a buildup on a 2wd Tacoma conversion? I keep finding reasonable 2wd Tacoma's on CL.
