: Duck Jacket recommendations
CRFRIDER 06-17-2009, 11:46 AM I have a pair of almost new Caddis chest waders. Looking to get a new Jacket in MAX 4 that matches. This will be for duck hunting from Colusa to Sacramento. Needs to be rain proof. I am not sure of the adavntages of an inside the waders vs. outside of the waders jacket. I have all the pockets/shell holders I need on my waders.
Any recommendations. I am leaning towards this jacket from Cabelas.
Drake MST Eqward Hooded Quarter-Zip Top (http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/product/standard-item.jsp?_DARGS=/cabelas/en/common/catalog/item-link.jsp_A&_DAV=MainCatcat20712-cat602230_TGP&id=0047802943313a&navCount=24&podId=0047802&parentId=cat602230&masterpathid=&navAction=push&catalogCode=IK&rid=&parentType=index&indexId=cat602230&hasJS=true)
Thanks.
Ben Segrest 06-17-2009, 11:53 AM For one, inside the waders would be a PITA to take off. It also won't allow the airflow that over the waders will. Of course if you are wading through deep water you may not have a choice. I don't know what kind of temps you hunt in, but for me layering is important. I've also got umpteen different jackets/pullovers/coats/shirts depending on where I'm hunting and what the temps are. I have a lot of Browning stuff that I buy after the season closes and it goes on sale.
CRFRIDER 06-17-2009, 12:16 PM I would say 20-40 degree range on a cold day, Quite a few 50-60 degree afternoons hopefully as well. I have a shell for those days.

Looks like the one from Sierra doesn't include the liner. Great reviews on it.
toymoto 06-18-2009, 06:55 AM I have one similar to the OP's that is Cabelas brand. I like it and often wear even when I'm not duck hunting. I really like the fleece bottom and mine have pockets up high so you can stick you're hands behind the waders and into the pockets to keep you're hands nice and toasty.
:edit: I couldn't find it online, I guess they don't make it anymore. This is what it looks like though...

f0cker 06-18-2009, 01:14 PM As a duck guide in the MS delta, all we use is Drake. We all ran the Drake gear before we got sponsored, now we run the same gear but it's cheaper. I hunt between 35-60 days per season and have never been happier with gear than I am with Drake. If they make it and I need it, I get it from them.
EDIT:

I ran that pullover every single day that I hunted this year, with the exception of three days where it was a good deal below freezing. I run it inside the waders if I'm going to be in water that I might need to monitor my depth in, but I'll wear it outside the waders when I'm in shallow water or layout blinds.

This is my warm weather top, if you know it's gonna be muggy or anything I'd get it.
Hey fOcker ( sorry couldnt help myself) You know you want to call your sponsors and figure out a way to pass along those savings to your P4x4 brothers, dont cha?

I wish I could, but I can't even hook up my family with much of anything.
mayday 06-18-2009, 05:46 PM i have had my columbia for 6 years and i could not be happier with it. the first 2-3 years it was worn every weekend for hunting season and then into fishing season. thing that i have liked best about it, has been the fact that it still keeps you dry and doesnt absorb water like most other water proof jackets that i have owned. on another note it is very tear resistant, i can not believe how many times i have snagged it on sharp ass objects thinking "oh fuck i just tore my jacket" to look down and see that it is still in one piece. the thing kicks ass, i hope they are still making products like that because it was money well spent.
