so I mashed the ps cooling line in my '83 fj40. It looks like the oem replacement is in the neighborhood of $200, and it's just some tube!!

Anyone know of a place I can get an actual cooler instead? Especially for under $200?!?

ok. Does it need to be rated for high pressure? Is that a total newbie question? Are there any I should avoid?

 no they are run through the return line(low pressure) any trany cooler will do, hyden is a good company, your local auto parts store will probably carry their line, just buy what ever size you need or can fit where you are mounting it, i got the 19.95 one, i think it was 6x11 or something a 4 row deal. jiMMy

I just used a power steering cooler out of a Chevy late model S-10 Blazer, it's about 12" long and 2" wide, fit's across the girll real nice!

Toyota mini trucks with auto trans have a nice cooler for the transfer case (mounted under the cab by the frame). The lines have a female compression fitting on one end that will screw right on to the male side of any factory PS or trans line, and use banjo style on the cooler end, which is nice for tighter installs. Nothing like factory parts for a clean install.

Stran,

I am running a Perma-Cool trany cooler, Jeg's part number 771-1010 rated for 14,000 GVW vehicles. I have it in inline with the stock cruiser cooler, and at $24.99 it is nice and cheep. Coil size 3/4" x 5"W x 12 1/2" L Most places stock Perma-Cool, since I got jacked by Jeg's I say get it from anyone but them.

I would offer up the stock cooler on my rig, but I plan on pulling the stock P/S in the next few months. I am sure the buyer of the whole stock set up will want the cooler to keep it all OEM. If you want to keep things all OEM on your rig, for less than $75 you can buy a small tube bender and flaring tool to reproduce the stock unit.

how big are the permacools? I don't wanna get too much in front of the radiator, as it already likes to overheat anytime I go over 55mph :(

why inline? there any problem just running new hoses to the pump? oh, how long are the hoses with the cooler (assuming they come with one)?

Dude.... you almost had it.... just read 8 more words past where you quoted from my post..Coil size 3/4" x 5"W x 12 1/2" L That would be 3/4" thick by 5" wide by 12 1/2" long. In other words rather small. As for inline with the other cooler? Two reasons, one extra cooling is good, two too lazy to pull to stock sucker off just yet. The hoses that where included in the kit, I cut down and not vary long. As for loss of engine cooling, you can always mount it behind the radiator or just below the fan or under the rig with an auxiliary fan. (not the best deal, but you really get more cooling than the stock tube cooler, with the fined tray cooler anyway) Just do you self a favor and DONT use the through radiator plastic zip tie things to mount the new cooler. Take the time to make a steel bracket out of some light duty strap like 1/8 x 3/4. This will save your engine radiator from getting hogged out by the cooler. I purposely went with this model of cooler since it had steel end pieces with mounting holes to hard mount it to a bracket.

Side note, the only reason I wanted all this extra cooling was to help keep the stock PS gear box from getting supper heated by the Hooker header that is about .250" away from it. Yes I even put a .065 aluminum heat shield between the two, but I still did not like how hot the box got. End the end I even set up the stock cruiser carb cooler to come on all the time and use a piece of 4" aluminum drier duct to force fresh air over the gear box. The gear box runs nice and cool now by being cooled internally and externally!

lol.

Ok, I think that's the one I want, then. Can I pick this up at napa, or do I need to send $30 to someone?

thanks, by the way.
