After wheeln' this weekend my :rainbow: Detroit EZ locker started snaping like crazy thru right turns. Like 5-6 times turning 90 degrees. No probs turning left. Pulled it and it looked fine but I had a nice pile of silvery shavings on the magnetic plug. Put it back and still have the problem. What do you think? Teeth worn? Springs worn? Should I try intalling it in the different direction or is it toast?

My friend had the same problem with his. Left Wheel would sometimes let go and snap,, like it had teeth missing on the gears, he pulled it apart and everything looks fine, he did notice a large amount of wear on some Thrust washers,,, so there wasnt enough pressure on the Teeth in the locker, causing it to ratchet...
I havent seen the ez locker in person, but who knows.. i think there is two thrust washers on either side???

pull it and replace it w/ new thrust washers, also while your at it, i would put new springs and pins in...just cus it's out already...but it should be the thrust washers...i have a ez locker in my front 44, and put new thrusts in there and haven't had any problems...YET!
OK man you are just kidding yourself here. Put in a mini spool.

Or a Real locker.
From what it sounds like you dont have very many miles on this thing.. Mine was doing that in my wrangler when I had it, I rebuilt it many times finally I broke it and went full detroit and never looked back.

i had a smilar problem w/ my d44 ez locker it would lock and unlock about every 20-30 seconds on the highway. anyhow it turned out the cross pin was scared. so check that. just call trac tech they will send you a baggie full of springs for nothing. (keep the old ones for trail spares)

Well, since you didn't tell is the vehicle or axle - I am gonna *guess* it is a Dana 35c rear that this problem is in?
Regardless, did you check to see that the carrier was in spec before you installed the locker? I find that most people do NOT check the carrier - like the install manual says - before they install the locker.

Its an 8.8" in a YJ. The carrier was new when the locker was installed.

I think the problem is that it is an EZ Locker. I had a CJ that came with one in the front. It also made the sounds you described (right or left turns) and it wasn't long before I broke it - sheared all 4 pins and wound it up tight.
IMO they are worthless - not just the cheEZ lockers, but the whole lunchbox assortment. I'd recommend either welding it solid and calling it a mini-spool, or using it for a paperweight that will always remind you that it's cheaper to do it right than to do it again.

Lloyd is right, everybody likes them because there cheap but sooner or later all lunchbox lockers break, ussually sooner, save your money and by a real detroit!

New doesn't mean the carrier specs out to have the locker installed as per the directions. Check the specs and know for sure.
