: first post, need help picking a truck/suv.
urban sub 06-18-2009, 01:45 AM is a 89 gmc suburban 1500 with a 6.2 anygood? i know that it has a dana 44 front and a 10bolt rear, what trans and t-case should it have?
(id be getting the truck for $900, so thats y im interested)
i know that the rearend sucks, but i can get a G.I grade d60 and a 14bolt. with 4.56 (i think?) and lockers, for $800.
will that 10 bolt will hold up to light/medium wheeling?(mostly mudding)
or should i put the 14 bolt and d60 under it?(i would change the gear ratio to pro 3.55 4.10 idk? something more street able)
i dont want to lift it more then i have to as i dont really like the look of high trucks, but i do want higher travel so i can put it up on the rocks, any good kits?
iv found almost nothing with google. and anything good is over 2k.
has anyone seen the old school avalanches?...were they cut the top off from behind the rear door al the way back off? so 4 door and small bed...I CANT FIND ANY PICS!!!! I KNOW THERE OUT THERE, CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME ON THAT ASPECT...im not 100% sold on that but i like that idea.
ok thats kind what im going for it would be a dd for the most part, but will be mudded and thrown over almost anything when ever it can be.
if you dont like what im thinking please tell me you are the ones out there doing it, so u SHOULD know kinda were im going.
KWTMECH 06-18-2009, 07:53 AM Vehicle will have 10 bolts front and rear, trans will be a 700 with a 241 t-case. Other than that, read and search, lots of info just in the chevy section alone
ManofSteel 06-18-2009, 08:00 AM easy on the skinny pedal and the 10 bolts will be alright. I have them front and rear on my K5 with 36" TSLs and no problem. I mostly just do mud and forest trails.
The big diesel has power but not speed. For bogging, people normally want a higher revving engine, but for the price, i wouldnt care.
If the truck is mostly rust free and if it runs, Id say get it!
Grumpy_old_fart 06-18-2009, 09:13 AM go buy a jeep.
urban sub 06-18-2009, 09:59 AM girls drive jeeps.
na, 2 of my friends owned jeeps, they got as far away from them as they could. always had problems. they took a pounding but nothing a chevy couldent.
TireFryerSS 06-18-2009, 10:29 AM Why in the hell would you change out the 4.56's to "3.55 4.10 idk? something more street able"
glenns89 06-18-2009, 10:43 AM Why in the hell would you change out the 4.56's to "3.55 4.10 idk? something more street able"
Doesn't make any sense. Why would you make it so you couln't drive in overdrive? Leave the gears alone and run the 60 and 14 bolt. they are cheap enough that you won't have to worry about anything.
GMCTruxrule 06-18-2009, 10:59 AM go buy a jeep eagle.
Fixed it for ya.:p
OffRoad 06-18-2009, 12:34 PM you don't know what truck you want
you don't know what mods you want
you don't know what you want to do
come back when you figure some stuff out. we're not gonna hold your hand.
get the truck, throw the axles under it, run some 37s, and go wheeling.

get the truck, throw the axles under it, run some 37s, and go wheeling.
And then; put a cage in it ... fix what you break with better/stronger parts... bend back the parts that you bend ... rattle can over the scratches ... cut off anything that is in the way ... you will have a buggy in no time. :D
Grumpy_old_fart 06-18-2009, 02:17 PM Or, go buy a jeep

ROCKBOXAZ 06-18-2009, 03:33 PM If you want a dd go get a honda.
If you want something you can go camping in at a moments notice then buy the burban put 1 tons under it with 37s and have a day!:flipoff2:
urban sub 06-18-2009, 03:50 PM i guess the s10 will just have to c more use....im going to check the burb out now....i will post up pics......if this guy answers his phone.

urban sub 06-18-2009, 11:17 PM but youre asking for his help.........
why cant it be dd with cut fenders, cage and beat down?
thats what im looking for!
outer cage, cut fenders,38s, that avalanche mod, and stacks. there does that sum up what im tryin for? as u may c in my first post i said that it was a $900 truck i wanted to put 1tons under for $800...$1700 truck what part made that sound like i wanted a show truck, i just needed some info (dont even say about that seach bar, ya i used it) there was nothing that helped me that much, found some info i needed. i will post more direct questions when i get the 1tons. trucks getting picked up this weekend.
urban sub 06-18-2009, 11:20 PM Id wheel it
that would be cool, i like your buggy better, that things BA.
how much $ it take to get it that way? just so i have a bar.
Corey Young 06-18-2009, 11:29 PM What buggy? The Willys wagon had about $10,000 into it.
urban sub 06-18-2009, 11:32 PM opp sorry, guess its not a buggy its the buildup thead "no lift and 48s"
and were can i find this wagon?...ill search.
Corey Young 06-18-2009, 11:48 PM "no lift and 48s" bottom of page 1 is the closest thing I have owned to a "buggy". Its parts have been re-distributed and the chassis was recycled. Expect to have @$10-$25,000 into a dependable daily driver, weekend wheeler.
urban sub 06-19-2009, 12:05 AM i was thinking 15k, but i see were it could go fast.
Overdosed 06-19-2009, 12:48 AM i was thinking 15k, but i see were it could go fast.

brooks294x4 06-19-2009, 09:38 AM Your not that guy that is building that chrome exo on a burb are you...... It smells like you.
no that was the kid that wanted to build the "Urban Assault Vehicle" with a "Command Station" to crawl the mall with
trkklr77 06-19-2009, 01:39 PM that guy was from oregon or wasington.
onlyifihadachevy 06-19-2009, 10:38 PM i would get the burb and tons cause with something that big it would be easy to break.
But his name has urban sub so it might be and i have a truck that im not posting up because its a pos. But he wants cheap but he has 15k for it what???
Grumpy_old_fart 06-20-2009, 12:08 AM that guy was from oregon or wasington.
had to have been washington.
if he were in Oregon, he would have been fawkin scalped already.
urban sub 06-20-2009, 01:01 AM i couldent get the truck today, he needed to help his friend move. im busy tomarrow so i cant get it and then im out of town for a week, so now i dont know whats going to happen to it, i mean theres others out there, but i kinda liked that one. for the price and shape it was in, i gave hime a $50 down payment so i hope he wont sell it.
i looked up that other guy ur talking about, the way he said what he was tryin to built made it sould kinda dumb.
edit: whats so good about this Chromoly stuff? it looks the same as reg tubing
but its twice the price.
whatever my dads a well driller so we have a bunch of thick walled 1.5in
scrap pipe in the back and thats what im going to use. we have like 400ft of the stuff.
so after this were tubing out a 48 plymouth.
the 15k thing was how much i was thinking i was going to put into this truck over many years.
McNealy 06-21-2009, 11:41 AM Easy ,get the tons cut the fenders and run the biggest tire you get to fit take the sway bar off and have some fun. Or put some 24" rims on it....that would it make a hardcore wheeler then lol
