got this litte notion of trying to add knuckles to one to makea front, and put a pair of them under my trail rig. :D

Uhhh yeah - ALOT!!

My Rockwells are top-loaders, so there isn't much that hangs down. Go check out those planetary Ring gears. The smallest one I saw on thier site was an 18" Dia. Ring Gear. Can you say "ground clearance"?

thats exactly what i was going to say. with almost 4 ft tall tires my work truck has only 8" clearance under the pumpkin.

I've got one in my shop right now. I estimate it weighs about 350 lbs without the hubs and drums attached. They add another 175 to 200 lbs. Gear ratio is 7.1 to 1 and the high range makes it about 5 to 1. I'm preparing it to put it under a 1 T 1951 Ford dump truck that I have to get a little higher gearing. It should work under many trucks but sure would be heavy under smaller vehicles. Parts are readilly available for the later ones but don't get one with the vacuum shifter. It is obsolete and parts are no longer available. Mine has a 5 bolt Budd hub on it so you would need to change the hub to something more suited to your needs. I did not measure the axle nor count the splines but it is near 1.5" but the splines are few and large. Mine came to me free from a friend but they should not be too costly from the right salvage yard as there seems to be very little demand anymore.
