Called forward air about shipping some axles, they said they have to be crated, I said "how about strapped to a pallet" and they said they have to be crated on all sides.....

I know a few folks here have had axles shipped through them.. did you crate yours? Kinda a PITA, we see things shipped here to our business all the time just strapped to a pallet.

Is there some trick to shipping the axles with them? Something I'm missing? Are you supposed to classify them as scrap?

BTW - they quoted me $34.94 per 100 pounds to El Paso from PGH, based on a 500 lb. minimum, this would be $174.70 for 500 lb.

Thanks

Not axles, but I shipped some doors to Cali.
I just stapled cardboard over the pallat so you couldn't see what was on it. They didn't hassle me about it.

I think it depends on the location the axle is getting sent FROM. I have got 3 axles sent to me. 2 only on pallets, one was crated like a coffin. The one I sent out also had to be totally enclosed.

I think it has to do with the shipping company's policy. Yes they are all forward air "locations" but forward air does not own the place here anyway. It is it's own shipping company.

I shipped an 8.8 from TN to OR for $80. The woman told me I had to crate it, but I said fawk that and took it there ratchet strapped to a pallet. My buddy did the same thing for 2 axles he shipped.

I just got one laying on a pallet, not even strapped down. it does just depend on the actual locations.

I just received one loosely chained down to a pallet. I did ship out a tranny/t-case and crated that one up. I wouldn't crate an axle though, nothing that can really get that damaged.

Ford front D60 sent to me (Dallas, Tx) from Chicago in a hell of a coffin - 3/4" plywood all the way around. Cost just under $120 to get it here.

I also sent out a D30 from Dallas to Ohio - cost was just under $100.

Strap it to a pallet. Better yet, check yellow frieght. Tell em both it is class 10 (scrap steel) for the cheapest rate.

I would be careful when doing this. Humm scrap steel is worth what a pound? And your axle is worth what? Then they loose it and try and give you $50 and say they are sorry and your screwed.

Of the 3 yellow freight deliveries I have got, boy was I glad they were mostly steel. They managed to put a good sized dent in the magnesium runflats of the hummer wheels I bought. When the guy opened the trailer door stuff was scattered all over the inside.

Get the best price but CYA in case it gets lost or damaged.

I sent a D30 and 8.8 Forward air with spare shafts and tie rod, etc. I just smacked it down on the pallet and strapped it, then shrinked wrapped it :D They didnt hassle me at all...forlifted it right outta my truck and off I went.

I shipped a motor to Utah and it was crated, I also helped badassjeepguy crate a D60 for shipping. We just took a pallet and built a frame out for 2x4's screwed to the pallet. We then cut some thin plywood and covered it. I guess we could have covered it in cardboard but too late now. The guys at the Forward Air terminal in Pittsburgh seem like nice guys I don't know if they will let it slide on just a pallet or not. It was a LONG drive for me so I didn't want to make a second trip for a few xtra pounds and time. $175 seems good for " a few axles " Let us know if you get it shipped just srtapped to a pallet. I have to ship a tranny in a few weeks and would like to know how it turned out.

I sent a D44 front, tied down with rope at the knuckles & the pinion to a pallet. Wrapped the ends & pinion in plastic. $64. My ForwardAir here has $60 minimum.
